Ok, here is the deal. Specs are

Mobo- Gigabyte AMD 970, model 2AC8

CPU- AMD fx6200

GPU- XFX Amd r9 380x 4gb

18 gb ddr3 ram

Ok, I really do not want to have to upgrade to a new mobo, and an intel cpu, because I reeeeally dont wanna plunk down 300 bucks. I know I will have to in the future, but I would rather that not be now.

So my question is very simple: What is the most powerful cpu my current mobo supports, and would you guys recommend it, and is it much of an upgrade?

Moved to hardware forum

You can upgrade to FX8370 180$ - fastest CPU for that MOBO of yours but that'll costs you as much as an i5

I'd go with FX8320 for 120$- not much of an upgrade but still something, there's also FX8350 which sold the most out of that series right in the middle for 150$ - also recommended and probably the best CPU in terms of price/performance gain.

I think FX-8300 is the cheapest 8 core Vishera, you can overclock it to 8370 or whatever you system is able to. But if you look at the benchmarks you'll see it's not worth it for gaming. Better sell that 380 and get a GTX 1060 or RX 480/470, and then save up for i5 or Zen.

+1 for FX8350. It seems to be the best reasonable (in price) choice.

But I am not so sure how much of an upgrade 2 extra cores + 400MHz of the same architecture will be.

In my opinion it will probably be waste of money. A cheap option too, is to keep the RAM and go for H81/B85 + i5 4440 for $220.

In the end its your choice, but I don't think its worth it to spend $150+ and after all, you will need to upgrade again in the near future...

@Coseniath: He'll get 10 more fps at Witcher 3 and probably even 10fps more at GTA5 if he'll OC it.

But yes I agree if he can upgrade himself to i5 for another 100$ it'll be wiser.

Actually not with Witcher 3, it is well optimized and is multithreaded correctly. An FX 8350 keeps up with i5 4960k with Titan X.

wccftech benchmark Taken from multiple areas vs techspot Griffin attack scene.....

Core i5 4690K – 52.0/79.2

FX 8350 – 56.0/75.2

GTA 5 he would see around 7-8 fps gain i5 4440 vs FX 8350

From TechSpot, tested only with Griffin scene

I know.... and its a poor benchmark choice

Wccftech tested city, village, swamp etc and FX 8350 kept up with i5 4690

" once we hit the heavy Novigrad area, they compete very nicely – the FX 6300 moves ahead of the i3, while the FX 8350 is very close to the 4690K."

When it comes to Wccftech, don't trust anything.

These guys are not professionals (although this is not so bad) and they are always not so honest...

Just a small example of their GPU editor (Khalid Moammer) before RX480 launch:

I hope anyone with GTX980 or R9 390X didn't sell their GPU... :S

@Coseniath:

All depends on the person testing/writing article too.

@04dcarraher: I agree, everyone is innocent, until proven guilty.

But for Wccftech is everyone is guilty, until proven innocent. xD
