So I have been dealing with this problem since I got my computer two years ago where every so often (maybe every two hours or so that I'm logged on) my computer begins to stutter and lock-up intermittently for probably around 2-3 minutes. During the 2-3 minutes the computer is barely responsive, it freezes and unfreezes continually until it eventually goes back to a normal state. I've tested hardware components fairly extensively because the problem has persisted through multiple system installations. I memtested all my RAM individually, got my video card replaced at a point, sent my motherboard back to ASUS for repairs when I thought it was that, used the seatools diagnostic program on my hdds, and just recently applied new thermal paste to my cpu. I have never figured out the problem. Needless to say I'm very frustrated because the computer is nice, but its always had that one very obnoxious problem. I'm putting up this image which shows my cpu activity during the most recent lock-up period. I'm barely running anything, but the thing spikes like crazy. Is there a good chance that it is actually the cpu? I have a first generation i7-920. Thanks in advance for any help. http://i.imgur.com/y039P.jpg

its been happening randomly for the last 2 years you say...

well im not sure if its bad bios settings or motherboard not liking the ram... but i'll just go through what comes first to my mind.

Try the asus website, and download all the windows drivers; intel chipset software updates, all the sata updates, usb drivers, network drivers, all the onboard audio updates for your motherboard. Also checked to see if you have a bios update?

I haven't had to reinstall windows forever, but when i do, i get pauses sometimes if I don't have to drivers updated for my chipset, and sata drivers, usb etc.

sorry if you've done all this already, i have no other ideas.

Thanks man. At least that's something. I'll try downloading those drivers, and see if that does anything.

It could be a bad processor. Although with whats happening it could be just about anything.

Well, the only reason I take a stab at it being the processor is because I've somewhat tested and/or replaced basically every other hardware component in the thing. I have no idea what it could be...

could equally be a virus.

I don't think it's a virus because it has continued to occur through multiple Windows installations over the years that I've had the computer.

Well there's only one way to test that idea.

Sorry if whatever you were getting at just went right over my head, but what would that be?

It's common for Viruses to do that, but if you've reinstalled windows multiple times it seems unlikely.

Run some scans anyway.

http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml Try this. If you get red spikes it could be a driver or motherboard issue.
