Hey forum,

I'm still rolling with the Q6600 @ 2.4, and I'm thinking about upgrading but I have a question. Most likely I'd want to aim for something like the i5-2300 (or similar performance in that price range), but being a bit of a novice at this sort of thing, will I need to get a new motherboard as well? The Q6600 is of course am LGA 775 socket and the i5 is an LGA 1155.

Also, with that upgrade, will I see a significant bump in anything? It's a pretty modest rig: 4gb ram and a 6790 1gb.

Thanks for your help!

New socket=new motherboard. As for everything else--I've been out of the PC market too long to provide legit advice.

Its a bad upgrade and rather pointless. You should aim for a i5 2500 as a minimum, its a quad core, the i3 is just dual.

the q660 ah the good time i had with my q8400 (smae stock clock but better cache and displacement as a result a better preformer..)

anyway yeah you would you would alos need to drop money on new ram as lga 775 was basically all about ddr2 (omitting the very last DFI boards which were ddr3 compliant .. but i digress)

basically your best option would be to skip the 2300 and get the 2400 or the 2500/2500k its intels big baby preformer and can do jsut about everything but raise the dead n walk on water (or so folks will tell you).

the other option.. the other option okay

is to hang on to your q6600 for a while longer n wait for amd to let the phenom II's go from the market. that same week the 6100 and 4100 will be amd's firing solutions for gaming.. skip the 4100 its like a q9500 series c2q.. its not worth the time of day for you. the 6100 is rather tempting sporting a price lower than the 2500k and well out of reach once they price cut it then of anything intel can put up while preforming near last gen's intel gaming prettyboy the i7 920.

both would be a huge boost to your cpu power and in games that like quad core or better your fps will jump noticeably in some cases 10-15fps or more.

however both options involve getting new ram.. nobody uses ddr2 anymore

amd's latest socket is am3+, intels is the 1155 socket. the 2500k is the weapon of choice but the 2400 aint a bad substitue if you cant pony up the difference.

so have i convinced you that my options "upgrade you"

i3 isn't really worth it, since you have to buy a new CPU, motherboard and ram you may as well spend a little more and get an i5 2500k, it's a great cpu.
