I have a x86 family 6 model 4 stepping 2 Authentic AMD ~ 1099Ghz In another part of my computer, it is called "AMD Athlon(tm)" I am trying to find out what socket I have so I can maybe upgrade since AMD chips are so cheap now.

My guess it's Socket A.

And upgrade? If it's a Skt A motherboard, then you can probably find a cheap AMD XP 3200+ cheaply somewhere. Otherwise, it's best for a complete overhaul of the computer.

An early s462 mainboard's BIOS isn't going to be equipped to enable all of the features and functions available from a later AMD processor, and the XP 3200 has been out of production so long that there are no new ones in the normal channels, and the few that are available are at unrealistically high prices now. Almost all of the late, Barton core, XPs have gone that way, with the exception of a relatively small number of XP 2200s and 2400s.

There are some heavy duty bargains available on good s754 mainboards for lower performance A64s and medium performance Semprons (which are still in production for s754 for another five months or so, and aren't priced high at all. The s939 CPUs have been out of production now for several moths, replaced by the AM2 versions, and are already becoming harder to find.)

I would recommend against getting locked into another dead end socket, however.

Thanks. I plan on building a new one soon, but, untill then, I want to push the poor PC in my sig to the max for as little as possible. I looked for a cpu with the most similar specs, and it was a socket A.

They are about $40 for anything considerably faster than what I have now, so, unless my cpu bottlenecks this graphics card, I will just wait until I build my new PC.

The Athlon 1.1 was a 100 MHz (maybe 133 MHz) CPU. The XPs that replace it were 266 MHz for the low numbered ones, 333 MHz for the middle and most of the upper ones, and 400 MHz for the very highest, as well as some of the next-highest. The old MB wouldn't even recognize anything newer than about an XP 1700, and probably would max out, after a BIOS Flash (if such was even available) at an XP 2000's performance level. My advice is to forget the old MB, CPU, RAM, everything. Any money spent on it is wasted. It will never come close enough to the kind of performance needed for recent games to justify the expense.

So, do you think I should only get a $45 AGP graphics card and just sit tight with the cpu? Then put the $30 towards a new rig.

Give it to charity, family member or friend or sell it. Then save for a new rig.

probably not, upgrading the cpu, especially on older hardware, in this case would probably be more trouble than its worth. You could probably get a better performance bost by formatting and reinstalling windows.
