Hi guys, so the time has come to upgrade my gaming pc.. i have already ordered a EVGA GTX 1070 SC.

I`m currently rocking the i5-2500k at stock speed... still going strong :)

I have ~£500 for the upgrade.

Is it worth waiting for the new coffee lake cpu? or just upgrade now?

I`m looking at...
i5-7600k £224

msi z270 gaming pro £140

G.Skill Ripjaws V Series DDR4-2666 16GB £135

Any reason for waiting for the new intel... and more important would the new cpu/mobo/ram fit within budget.

@thebigyin:

Forget about the current i5's their waste of money now with Ryzen out and when coffelake actually hits the market.

If you cant wait... Ryzen 1600 or 1600x is a better buy than i5 7600k. Ryzen provides haswell/broadwell ipc with more cores and threads vs intel's current mainstream segment (ie LGA 115*).

If you can wait it out until the holidays then Cofeelake should be out and will provide a 6 core i5 and i7's with 6 cores with 12 threads. i3's are moving into the old i5 realm of being quad cores. Ryzen will also get price cuts to compete most likely.

Thanks for the help.

Having a look around at some benchmarks i think i`ll go with the Ryzen 1600....

Its cheaper than the intel -£35

Comes with cooler, again saving ~£25

and going with the Asus prime b350 motherboard i can save £55

and its easily overclockable to ~4ghz

@thebigyin: You say its easily OC'able but you're running the 2500k at stock speeds.

@GTR12: Only because the aftermarket cooler mount is broken and I've been too cheap to replace it, lol, so it's running on stock cooling just now hence the reason for no overclock. I've had that chip well past 4ghz.

@appariti0n: That was my first thought but I have other plans for the i5, it's going into another case to be used for watching YouTube and doing google hangouts.

Ah I just did the same upgrade from the i5 2500k :)

I went with the ryzen 1700 only because I wanted to play around with some video editing.

In terms of fps in games, don't think the max frame rate is vastly better but it definitely feels a lot smoother with less stuttering and fps drops

Also as I have read for gaming no real difference between the 1700 and 1600

I have overclocked the CPU but am lazy so used the Asus software to do it for me
