Im getting a new PC and was wondering should I go with Intel or AMD, I was thinking of going with the e4400 or is it worth paying the extra bit and stepping up to a e6320 or e6420, on the AMD side of things I was looking at the x2 4600+, the guy in the PC shop said if going with AMD Id have to buy expensive DDR2 800 ram or the processor would be underclocked is this true? Im really confused and not sure what to do :P, what do you guys think?

I'd go for teh e6420 and possibly a mild OC. It's too much like work to get a stable oc for me ;)

You don't sound like an overclocker - I'd recommend you pick up the E6420, or at least the E6320.

If futureproofing is more important: Get the X2 4600.

If you're into hardcore OCing: E6420.

I don't want to know what relationship your pants has to poles...but regarding the topic, those aren't options he's willing to pursue.

Id love to get a faster processor or even a quad core but I cant really justify spending that much when the less expensive chips are almost as fast in todays games and applications. Thanks for the reponses so far :)

Well he has a pole in his pants of course, anyways I would go with the X2 4600+ just because its powerful enough for mostly anything and very affordable too as opposed to most of the Core 2 Duos on that list.

If you really want the most powerful CPU though go for the E6420.

You do not have to buy expensive DDR2-800 memory with AMD processors, it does not reduce the clock speed of the processors. If you purchase a slower DDR2 memory, you'll just end up with lower memory bandwidth.

As for suggestion, I'd go with the E6420, overall.

How does that work?

K10 is coming soon and AM2+ motherboards with it.

AMD's new processors will also work on regular AM2 mobos with a BIOS updateand the extra features diabled, while the penryns will need a whole new mobo, and K10 is obviosuly gonna give intel a ****load of trouble...at least until penryn comes out.

AM2 is backwards compatible with AM3 hardware. Alas, he is futureproofing his system with the X2 4600.

Plus AMD will rise again!

Ya'll haters will see. ;)

Going with intel actually doesnt need powerful DDR2 RAM with overclocking, so I would definately go for the E4400, but I just recently got an E4300 =(, didnt know it came out already.

He's not going to buy a new cpu right after buying this one, and who wants to use their power-hungry quads on an outdated board anyway? I say anything other than a c2d isn't worth it at this time, unless you're on a strict budget.

yea atm the C2d would seem the most wise choice has the most bang for buck atm.

The new AMD CPUs sound interesting. Are there any benchmarks vs C2D? I kinda need a new PC now though but I could hold off a while if theyre around the corner. How far off are these new AMD CPUs?
