Yes you CAN do that! I'm not sure if it's the full dx10 but it looks like it. I justfound it out, and quite annoyed of why do we have to get windows Vista if it's posible to run dx 10 on xp.

It worked for me fine except the 20 fps, but that's my card's foult. If you have any problems i would be happy to help.

So i'm thinking maybe there is a way to tweek other dx10 games like bioshock. If you have any ideas let me know.

There's a link to this in Gamespot's own hardware performance guide. Sucks though, most people won't be able to take advantage of this, their pc's can't handle it. :(

It's not DX10 in XP, it's very high settings in XP. Very high settings are neither what enable DX10 effects, nor do the settings require DX10 (Vista and a DX10-compatible video card) to be enabled. Very high is simply locked out automatically if you have either XP, a DX9 video card, or both. Speculatively, this is because they were paid off by Microsoft and possibly the video card companies to do so in order to increase sales for Vista and DX10 video cards.

All that trick is doing is providing a workaround for the automatic very high lockout. You simply copy certain lines in the very high .cfg file over corresponding lines in one of the other setting .cfg files (let's use high, for example), which makes it so that anytime to you put any of the video settings to high, it's really at very high.

DX10 is only possible in Vista with a DX10-compatible card. But very high doesn't need DX10 like they would have you believe. DX10 can be used for any of the settings - low, medium, high, or very high - as long as you have the proper OS and video card. But it only provides a very minor visual improvement, and while for some, Vista DX10 performance may be substantially better than Vista DX9 performance (which is the way it's supposed to work), some seem to get no gain or even experience a drop in performance from this. And even for those that do get better performance with Vista DX10, their performance would likely still be better in XP DX9 due to the performance constraints of Vista.

Cool, a fellow DC Talk fan. Nah, I don't think they should get back together, at least not permanently. For one, they're older and have more responsibilities to their personal lives now (what with Toby having a wife and kids, and all), and being together in a group would mean all three would have to be available at the same time for going on tour. And for two, I actually really like their solo stuff. It's neat to see each of their own personal styles, and I want to see more from each of them (especially Michael, he hasn't done anything for ages last I checked). However, I would like to see them do one more album together eventually for old time's sake. That'd be awesome.

It's funny you mention them, I was just thinking of changing my Toby Mac quote to a DC Talk one.

JP Russel is right. You can run the game on Low and on DX10 at the same time if you want.

What happened was at the time Crytek implemented those directx 10 effects, there was no directx 10 hardware available. So they emulated the features in directx 9 to reproduce them on directx 9 cards. It's not the same as having directx 10 and it won't always work in future titles.

You should use the config tweaks then to make the game look & perform in between. Some effects really make the game look a lot prettier and enabling them alone won't kill performance. For the demo I prefered to use a mix of medium, high and very high to make it playable and pretty looking. I won't be getting Crysis until it is cheap, I am saving for Far Cry 2 (it promises to be much more detailed and advanced indirect lightning looks awesome).

Nice aerith sig avatar BTW.

JP Russel: how can we tell if a game is using the DX10 code-path rather than the DX9 code-path (or even a mix of them)?

It can't use a mix of them. In Vista, there's some way you enable the game to work in DX10 before entering the game (I can't remember if you just go into the game's shortcut's properties and set it to run in DX10 or what, but it's something like that).

I think medium is CoD4's "high." I've seen topics on here asking about that, and that's what the answers were. Weird, I know, but oh well.
