crysis on vista really better?

I just played crysis on vista with my new graphics card. Asides from being dissapointed with the overall performance I am also shocked to see not much difference between Dx10 and Dx 9 anyone else here has any comments about how much better the visuals are in Vista? If they are even worth it?

I am thinking of going back to Xp.

DX10 is meant more for increased performance than upgraded visuals. Almost every graphic effect that can be done on DX9 can be done on DX10. However, DX10 is a more efficient rendering method, allowing for more things on-screen at a time for the same performance. Playing the game in DX10 mode in Vista instead DX9 in Vista will give you a performance boost (some will tell you otherwise because they're apparently confused, but they're wrong). But XP performs so much better than Vista that it still provides better performance than the boost of DX10 in Vista.

Stick with XP for any kind of gaming for now.

Sorry, but I really believe you are the one that is confused. DX10 does not give a performance boost. I've seen the framerate comparisons to DX9 to prove it. DX10 is a very system intensive technology; by no means does it give a performance boost.

On vista x64 he game in DX10 is almost unplayable on my Q6600, Geforce8800GTX, but when you do it in DX9 mode it's pretty darn smooth.

I've seen comparisons done by people on Gamespot's Crysis forum, as well as in person. DX10 gives a performance boost. If it doesn't for anyone for any reason, my belief is something is wrong somewhere along the line, whether it has something to do with the way the DX10 drivers are working in their system or something else. DX10 isn't intensive, it does almost nothing more than what DX9 does. Its entire purpose is performance, it isn't meant to provide more stunning visuals by any means (other than providing more performance, thus allowing you higher settings for the same performance as before).

So what you're saying is that Crysis should run better on Vista with Direct X 10 then XP with Dx9?ShotGunBunny

Well, than that's pretty sad because XP with DX9 is still faster than Vista with DX10. So what exactly is the purpose of DX10? Making gaming in Vista a LITTLE bit less horrid, but still pretty bad compared to XP?BlackAlpha666

I still say you are somehow misled. I don't believe you or these other "people on Gamespot's Crysis forum." Your claims are contrary to every review of the game and article on dx10 I have read. And don't even go trying to blame my system, and most everyone else's, saying something is wrong. It's basically all new hardware with the latest supported drivers and updates. You should also read this article which clearly dispels the myth that dx10 offers a performance boost.

Btw, I just browsed the Crysis forum, and I didn't see anyone boasting about their dx10 performance being better than dx9. If if there were, they are outnumbered by countless threads were people are getting worse perfomance with dx10.

There are very few things Vista and true Dx10 can do that Dx9 cant. To say that Crytek cheated us by not allowing very high in Dx9 and that Dx9 very high is the same as Dx10 very high is technically not true, but for all practical purposes it is.

Oh, and very high runs faster on XP than it does on Vista...I think at least 10% faster.

Also, I heard XP Service Pack 3 is coming out and while the preview didnt hint on game performance, it says windows apps run like 30% faster.

i've done benchmarking on my machine using 64bit vista running dx9 and dx10, as well as 64 bit and 32bit. dx10 showed a slight improvement vs. dx 9 ( 2-3 fps ) on high settings for me.
