static images always look better than animated video when it comes to games, but even so - they are just amazing

i hope crytek licenses its engine out to a lot of developers and we see plenty of cry powered games over the next year

because it is just awesome

Many people would argue with you that infact the opposite is true. A game in motion usually looks much better than screenshots. You might be thinking of the pre-release screenshots you see that publishers touch up and send to the sites and mags to market a game.

no, i really do think static images look more impressive, for example - if you run a video of crysis side by side with a video of real life, is anyone going to have even the slightest problem spotting the difference? i certainly didn't - but with the images, i really had to look for specific telltale signs before i could say with certainty which was which for some of the images

it reminds me of that old CG final fantasy film (the spirits within i think?), you ever see that? when i first saw screens of that it just blew my mind how awesome it looked, it was really something - but as soon as you see it running, animated - it looks pretty awful

i do know what you mean about thinking it's the other way around, though, and at times i think that's true - but there are just situations where i feel the opposite is also true, it's far easier to take in every tiny detail when you've got a freezeframe as an example, while a lot of that extra detail just isn't processed by your brain when you're playing the game, or your attention is just focused elsewhere - or, as with the crysis videos, the final fantasy CG film thing happens and as soon as it's animated it's just, yeah, it's nowhere near real life quality

As good as they may look, the real-life picture still looks 10x more rich and detailed. Rendered images just look too perfect and that easily takes away the illusion. With moving images it's even more obvious. Even if you can render something that looks just as the real thing, animating it is much harder, like in the FF movie you mentioned.

Crysis is one of those games though that looks better in motion than it does in still pictures, thanks to motion blurr.

Seems like the Unreal Engine will get owned on this one.  I would like to see some indoor shots.

In 3-4 years game will be totally photo realistic, just imagine what Cry Engine 3 will look like with 16 core processors and a R1000 video card.....Just like real life!(Seriously!)

Of course I don't want to think to much ahead though:D

actually when looking at an image you have time to notice problems, but when walking around in a game you dont have time to see minor details so it looks better. this game is amazing, admit it.

Although it does look amazing, its still pretty easy to tell the difference when looking at the static images. I could immediatly tell which was real life and which was the game. The harder a game tries to look "real" the easier it is to spot "outstanding" flaws in its attempt to simulate reality.
