Alright... I preordered Half-Life 2 The Orange Box and I downloaded the TF2 beta when I try to play the game it says "In order for this game to run properly you must have directx 8.0 or higher." After seeing that I went to my system information which says I have Directx 9.0c... What the heck is wrong with steam? How do I fix this problem?

And BTW I can run half-life 2 and episode 1 perfectly fine.

does it block you from playing? or is it just a message where you can click ok and continue. And post your specs also.

Nope I can't play at all... I can play all of the games that must have directx 9.0c or higher to play(I.E, The Sims 2, RCT3)... it just makes no sense...

Specs:

Processor: p4 1.7 GHZ

RAM: 512 mb RAM

Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 2 (which I think is one of the first Directx 9.0 cards)

Lol yes I do notice that I have the exact minimum requirements in order to play the game...

As of right now i'm redownloading DX 9 off of microsoft's website.

No, it wasn't. It was only a DirectX 7 card. The first DX9 cards were the GeForce FX (5) cards. TF2 requires a DX8 card or better, as the error was telling you. Its time to upgrade.

I can run WoW, the Sims 2, and roller coaster tycoon 3. All three of these games require DX9.0c or higher to run. I'm pretty sure the geforce 2 supports DX9.0c

EDIT: Oh that's weird nevermind... The Sims 2 website says that even though the Geforce 2 doesn't support DX 9.0c it is capable of running some DX9 features required for playing the game... thanks for the help...

I am getting a new PC within the next few months...

Once again someone blames Steam for something that's completly not it's or Valve's fault.

The Radeon 9700/9500 Pro cards were also DX9, as they supported SM2. :) Something like a Radeon 8500/9100 or anything newer would be a DX8 card for sure. A GeForce4 Ti (NOT an MX) or anything newer would also be DX8.
