http://www.nowgamer.com/news/1326009/dark_souls_pc_dev_responds_to_drm_backlash.html

'Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition is incoming on PC, although the game's use of DRM security has led to an uproar among the PC gaming community.

NowGamer quizzed Dark Souls PC developer From Software about the decision at a recent Namco Bandai showcase event.

Publishing producerDaisuke Uchiyama exlained, "As for Games For Windows, that's the established server that we used for the Xbox 360 version of the game. So that is the main reason we chose Games For Windows again. The partnership is still on going and we might have another announcement in regards to the platform."

Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained the need to crack down on piracy, "We had the issue with the game selling in advance on consoles before the release date. We need to prevent that situation."

Miyazaki also explained that Dark Souls on PC is in fact, a straight port of the console version, "As for improvements to graphics and such, they are not planned at this point. A we said, this is a straight port of the console version."'

Pretty much like everyone thought. I really hope this isn't a shoddy port and the controls, multiplayer, and menus all work right.

Not looking good here, I'm really highly doubting the worth of this port now. Won't be re-buying it by the looks of it...

Ok, that's one less game to buy this year. If they aren't doing anything to make the game better than I'll just stick to playing it on consoles.

As long as the port isn't shoddy control-wise or the graphics somehow **** up like RE4's loss of atmosphere I'm still buying. Never cared for graphics; still play games that are 10 years old, and I've never played the game before, otherwise I wouldn't buy it. But they be adding extra content for the PC anyway.

I think anybody expecting them to rework the graphics for the PC doesn't really understand the position From Software is in. They have to do this port as cheaply as possible. Spending times to rerender textures and models would just add cost.

We'll get higher resolution support and *maybe* AA and whatnot.

This is going to be a very bare bones port. I just hope it works.

Make it easy to unpack / pack the texture files and the pc community will fix the textures. Just throw in some graphic options, make the draw distance abit better, aa, remove 30fps limit, higher res... Anything more then that would ofc be great but its not a requirement. Im playing Dark Stone right now so i cant be one to complain about the grapic. Just dont keep it at 720 (or do the game run under 720?). Make the K/M work and remove GFWL ;)

This is still a good thing for PC gamers who don't own any consoles, like myself. I will be watching this game.

I don't care about updated graphics , I only hope the game runs well at 1080p . the game looks good on consoles but it needs higher resolution and some AA .

We're getting NEW CONTENT people...who cares if the graphics are the same? Also Wasdie put it well. As long as the game runs and works it will be awesome, it is truly a unique experience.

I am becoming less excited each time more news is released. Still going to keep an eye on this and if the reviews are good news I'ma get this game. Probably not day 1.

WAIT...

Was piracy on the consoles blamed for the DRM on the PC version?!

Or am I reading the article wrong.

The graphics will be just like any other port. 1080p and possible AA. The hardware will vastly improve fps. It will look better. Plus we are getting added content.

People asked for a port. Thats what they are getting-not an rewritten game.

As long as they get the controls, performance and online portions right, it's fine. As in full mouse support, no GTA IV-ish performance, and playing with others working as intended. Sure some AA and whatnot would be nice, but I don't feel it's required.

Not everyother direct port supports 1080 and AA, so I wouldnt get my hopes up for that. Then again, it shouldnt be a problem.

You need to lower your expectations a little bit more from what i have been reading :-

First up, support for a keyboard and mouse will be included but minimal, with Miyazaki recommending use of a game pad and confirming that the menu and inventory screens will remain unaltered.Miyazaki

There is talk that the framerateis locked to 30fps and there is even some confusion over whether the game will even allow you to play beyond 720p res. Honestly whatever limited expectations you have of this game you would do well to lower them even further. Personally from what I have read so far if I was interested in this game a whole manner of alarm bells would be ringing for me.

It seems they are putting absolutely no effort into the PC version whatsoever, it will be a direct 1:1 port of the console version. It is kinda depressing to think PC gamers are happy with that kind of treatment these days but what can you do.

slimjimbadboy

Well I am wondering if they either translated what he said wrong or took it out of context because it makes no sense. The quote on consoles isn't even piracy. A store breaking release date and selling a game isn't piracy. That would almost be like saying pre-orders are piracy (I know not exactly the same, but still).

All I know is that it made no sense is how that would even remotely impact the need for some DRM. "Well people wanted our games so badly that they paid for it prior to its release... we really need to crack down on that...".

It works the same way though. With some DRM, you can prevent the game from starting before the release day. As for why they are that concerned with that, who knows?

But why on earth would you want to ever deter people for buying your game? I can see why they would do this if it was actually pirated on consoles (which can happen). I can only see their reasoning being they had lunch with Ubisoft and figured their console experience was sort of not exactly or even remotely close to the same thing, but that they should do something that people are obviously against. And it doesn't really work the same. In the circumstance with the consoles they didn't lose money. Companies stance against piracy is that they are losing sales which they are entitled to and what they said is that they had sales earlier than expected. I do not necessarily see how that translates to piracy on the PC unless they have this idea in their head that PC gaming is filled with pirates and people that are not as willing to pay as console gamers, which is actually fairly true... just look at how well DLC sells. There is just a big difference from someone torrenting the game a week before it comes out and someone going to a store and buying it a week before it comes out. It just isn't the same.

I don't mind GFWL all that much (I still signed the petition) but if it is locked at 30fps and 720p then fvck that. Nobody is going to buy that sh*t.

CEO Tim: "We need to crack down on Piracy, what should we do?" Gamer Joey: "Maybe just sell games that are worth buying and make it really easy to buy it for a reasonable price?" CTO Greg: "No, no. We should install features in the game that punish the paying customers so there is more incentive to pirate the game!" CEO Tim: "Yeah, like GFWL! Right Greg?" CTO Greg: "Yeah! All the kids will love it, and Bill told us we'd get a lot of marketing money too. Microsoft makes business decisions so easy to make!" Gamer Joey: "Umm guys, everyone's pirating your game..." Tim & Greg: "God damn, what's with all these kids and their sense of entitlement!"

Well in my opinion console games look washed out... It will be even worse if you play it on a PC because it can be alot closer to the screen... Like i said, res, draw distance, (textures would be good but if not make it easy for the pc community to create new ones), AA, no 30fps limit... Extra things that would make me happier: PC UI, Better lights / shadows, graphic options. But yeah =)

Proper controls and higher res is all we really need from the port ;) I'll sort out AA/AF via drivers.

All I'm looking for out of this port is native resolution support and no cap of 30 FPS. Considering both of those require minimal work I'm not overly worried.

I will buy the game regardless. They are in a tight spot and I dont think they can do anything about graphics and such.

I am ,though, wondering if they community will be given any resources to make some fan made content or texture enhancments.

They should at least do that if they cant tailor the port to the pc 100%

I don't mind, It will be very well damn worth it, it's that much of a great game. As long as the controls work (which they probably will) everything will be just fine.

Resolution and AA/AF alone make the game look a good bit better. That's fine by me. The gameplay is what makes DS awesome.

I would be happy with that, as long as the performance isn't horrible, and the controls aren't crap, then I would be content with the porting.

If it looks the same and the horrible FPS issues are not fixed I wont be buying this.

Was stoked on getting it for PC if the issues that the ps3 version had where fixed.

GFWL and no improved graphics does not bother me as much as the damn FPS issues the game had on consoles.

I'd hate to think what the repercussions will be if there's a huge outcry when this is released. What incentive will there be for developers to port other games if this gets shut down?

I'm quite excited about this game comming to PC. There are very few titles on the consoles worth porting over, and this is one of those. As for the DRM, this has me worried a bit -with less then perfect internet connection there will be constant disconnects and crap. And as far as I know, all previous DRM attemps have been cracked anyway. What's the point in subjecting the paying user to this again?

Nono, people wanted the GAME on PC. I don't think it was specified whether people wanted a barebones port or not. A "straight port of the console version" can mean a lot of things. We obviously can't take stability, high-res support, uncapped framerates, proper networking, etc. for granted anymore, since so many PC versions of games have screwed that up in the past.

LA Noire was a real eye-opener for me as to just how bad a PC port can be. And From Software aren't exactly competent developers regarding the technical side of the game. Dark Souls looks and runs like crap on console.

I can't say I am one of those people, but I would argue people didn't ask for a "port" they wanted a PC version of the game. No one is asking that they build the game from the ground up on the PC. However some BASIC PC features would naturally make for a better product and you know like encourage people to buy your game. I am of course talking about features like decent mouse support as opposed to "minimal", things like improved framerates as opposed to locked 30fps. support for higher resolutions beyond 720p (seriously I haven't used that low a res in nearly ten years).

My own personal view is if this is the best they can bring to the table then they needn't have bothered at all and like I said I find it depressing that PC gamers are willing to reward a company for this lack of effort.

This.

Also as a PS3 and gamepc owner I can say this game still looks very decent. Very acceptable for pc standards.

It will be worth buying. People will just fall and rebel over anything it seems.

As long as the frame rate is good and the controls are tight I can live with a straight console port tbh.

[QUOTE="spittis"]As long as they get the controls, performance and online portions right, it's fine. As in full mouse support, no GTA IV-ish performance, and playing with others working as intended. Sure some AA and whatnot would be nice, but I don't feel it's required.charmingcharlie

This doesn't look good, I don't like the idea of having to play 720 or less on a 1080 machine.

I'm inclined to agree.

As a PC Gamer, I'm pissed they didn't do this sooner. :P

Now I have to buy 2nd...maybe even 3rd copy of Dark Souls. Gaming is so expensive these days :(

As long as the game doesn't say, "Press the A button to start".

As long as it works fine I'm not too bothered; I'm just happy that it's coming to PC.

Will the game be demanding at all? I heard it had some framerate issues on console.
