Hey all. Just bouht DOW 2 for my bother and realised during installation that the internet connection is required for steam activation. Now this wouldn't be a problem usually because he has steam on his computer. But what has ticked me off is that it requires steam and yet I payed ofr a physical game that I don't want to be used through steam. Steam is ok for valve games or games that are only available through steam but I hate it for other games. So now, it is registered to his steam account which I am less than happy about. Also, it won' start up because of 'missing hardware'. He has the latest drivers and everything is up to date. he has had no problem with any of his other new games and yet this one won't start. Any Ideas?

PS: I am pissed off about the steam usage, I hate DRM.

The game uses Steam for DRM so there is no way around it. it doesn't matter that you got the box version. Maybe you don't meet minimum specs.

Well, theres a few advantages about it being tied to steam. First, you can now download the game one the steam account instead of requiring installation from the disc. Second, you can play the game without needed the disc in the drive. It also updates the game automatically since the developers have talked about wanting to put out patches in much greater frequency than previous games. I think its worth it.

As for your problems, you should probably be a bit more specific with it. "missing hardware" doesn't say much. Nor does it say what its missing.

EDIT: i just did a quick search on google for 'DoW 2 "missing hardware"' and the first result was this very same thread. No mention of anything else related to Dawn of War 2. I dont think your problem exists, or its a different problem.

The reason I am not keen on steam is because it stops me from say installing dawn of war 2 on my computer since it appears not to be working on my brothers. its uneccesary to have it tied to steam.

Why does it stop you doing that? Hell it makes it EASIER to do that.

Excuse me if this would sound a little condescending, but this kinda makes me a little disappointed with you whiners. Didn't you read the box requirements if you are having hardware issues and not meeting the requirements?

Isnt steam free? So what if it's tied to it. That's great, that probably means you don't need the CD anymore.

There are gamers out there without internet connection? Yeesh, get with the times people. At least get DSL, it's cheaper than a meal at Ruby Tuesday.

To people seriously not read anything on the back of the box anymore these days? It says in bright red letters "internet connection required" and a nice Steam Works logo under it. Hmmm if you ask me you need this new fangel internets to play the game.

I have an issue with installing this game through steam also, i have an internet connection i'm not stupid, but i had it on my laptop no probs until my hardrive span a spaz and had to be replaced. Now that i want to reinstall in on my new hardrive it downloads and i dont know, it seems to install but just wont launch the game. On offline mode it says it cannot configure with my steam cloud and continueing would erase my saved data, which makes sense except it still wont launch. When i try to launch it on online mode it pops up the cd key tells me to write it down (I have) because i will need to enter it after game launches, It goes ahead and says preparing to launch dawn of war II. (Or Dawn of war II Chaos Rising, i bought the double pack not that it matters because launching either does the same thing just shows a different CD Key) After this afew boxes pop up for around half a second i think one says loading 1/2 or something i can't print screen it i can't click at the speed of light thanks steam, but the issue is i think steam thinks i still have it installed on another computer and it wont allow a 2nd or something. Anyways i can't find and answer anywhere, It's just a waste of a game for me at the moment. =[ If anyone has any suggestions or has had the same problem could you please help? I'm sorry for any convienience but steam is really driving me up the wall now i can't understand why people dont have a problem with steam its just as stuborn as itunes lol.

You're probably not going to be thrilled by the fact that you need to login to GFWL too, once you startup...

I'm probably wrong but I suspect the people who are haveing issues are using pirated versions of the game. I bought the game from Steam and have since bought a new computer and installed it on that pc via Steam with no issues. My new system has a completely different OS, went from an AMD processor to an Intel, and a Nvidia GPU to an ATi and no issues.

I have my steam games installed on multiple computers on not a single problem, I switch from playing games on my desktop to my laptop or to my brothers computer on the fly by just entering my password again. Your issue has something to do with your hardware, not steam.

Steam isn't the issue with Dawn of War 2. It's GFWL. From my personal experience, I get this freeze/pause every 3-5 minutes and it's annoying.
