The GPU and amount of ram is much more important that the actual type of ram. Right now, GDDR5 memory isn't really a factor in bottlenecking cards unless there isn't enough of it. GDDR6 is just part of the natural evolution of computer parts, higher bandwith, lower latency, lower power. The ram type doesn't need to be changed out to achieve higher speeds, as an early GDDR6 card will have slower memory than a much later model card with GDDR6.
The PS4 and Xbone are using GDDR5 and DDR 3, so this won't even be a factor for them, although games on all platforms are expected to begin using much more ram since the consoles are no longer in shortage of it.
It'll be highly unlike to find a game that relies heavily on memory speed, but not also a very fast gpu. When the 7970 becomes obsolete, it won't be solely because of the memory. I'm guessing DDR4 will be mid 2014, and GDDR6 months later (plus whatever time it takes ot show up in consumer products), so it's probably two whole card gens away yet.
Your 7970 was technically obsolete over 2 years ago, but it should last a few more years at the minum. Depends on how bad you prefer ultra setting over high.
