I've been playing Dead Space today and I have to say I'm quite impressed. This is the first game this year that really sucked me in, apart from GTA IV. Granted, the setting is nothing new, but the game manages to build quite an immersive atmosphere. The weapons and Zero G gameplay are also fun. I'm in Chapter 10 now, so I think I'll finish it today.

Did anybody else play it? Let's talk a bit about it, if only to get away from Far Cry 2. :P

Edit: EA denied it, but the references to Scientology are quite obvious. I think it's good to see political statements in video games. Shows the maturity of the medium.

I've played it; it is quite excellent. There were some very memorable chapters (like chapter 6), and I really like the gunplay (and yes, keyboard & mouse >>> gamepad in this game). I even enjoyed playing the mini-games, like the shooting one or the basket/handball game. All in all, two thumbs way up.

I'm currently playing it and am very impressed! Really immersive!

As for Keyboard/mouse > Game Pad... i actually like playing with a gamepad more... since responsiveness is longer than keyboard and mouse, making it more enjoyable in the Surviving part of the game :P

installed the game today and enjoying it so far, despite it crashing twice lol.

Controllers are definetly better for 3rd person shooters.

I'm using a 360 gamepad because the mouse is very laggy with vsync turned on. I tend to avoid it, but in Dead space it works because the weapons are clearly designed for ease of use on a controller.

Turn vsync off. If you need it turn it on with Nvidea control panel or the ATI one. Vsync caps it @ 30fps which makes the entire thing laggy.

I've heard disabling V-Sync completely causes other problems (though I haven't tested it myself.)

Someone said on the Dead Space GameFAQs forum that if you turn off V-Sync in-game and enable it via your video card control panel, the input lag will go away. Worked great for me.

Thats a very broad, inaccurate statement... Max Payne, Hitman, Tomb Raider... All 3rd person, all play great with a KB/m.

I love this game. I was playing on impossible the other day and I ran into a room trying to avoid some necros. I checked the room for vents and I didn't see any. So I turn my back to look at the creatures roaming outside then I notice this shadow behind me... It turns out there was a small floor vent behind the desk. You usually can't get away from enemies. This game is the best horror/atmosphere since System Shock 2. It's easily the most immersive TPS since the beginning of gaming.

It's annoying that people go and rate this game a 1 simply because of its controls. Bunch of 9.0s and 8.5s set off balance by the few people who are ignorant enough to rate a game before even playing it.

Max Payne & Hitman: no way.

Tomb Raider: maybe..since it involves alot of platforming. I haven't played one of those games in ages, though.

Shooters in general work far better with a KB/M imo. Third person shooters are pretty much identical to first-person shooters control-wise..so I don't really understand why people will say FPS games play best with a KB/M (widely-accepted fact), only to turn around and say TPS games play better with a controller. It doesn't make the least bit sense.

Regarding Dead Space KB/M was a little awkward. Aiming with the mouse and using stasis/kinetics or zero g-jumping with the keyboard just felt uncomfortable to me.

But generally I'd have to agree that KB/M allows for more accurate control.

I experienced no problems with the keyboard and mouse, and I would definitely disagree with whoever wrote that gamepads are better suited for 3rd person games. Dismemberment is a HUGE part of the game, and no matter what gun you use, the mouse control allows for great accuracy. I just listened to the guys at noobtoob review the game (they're generally console gamers, and thus were presumably playing one of the console versions of the game), and they mentioned how this game gets really tough towards the end. I actually experienced no such problems. I thought the game was fairly easy from start to finish. In fact, the more I got used to the game, the easier the game became, and I rarely died in the latter four or five chapters.

The game works extremely well with the keyboard & mouse. If anyone's worried about the controls and are thus hesitant about buying the game for that reason, don't let those things concern you.

I liked the asteroid part!!! In fact, I thought those types of mini-games brought some much needed pacing to the game. Some of them, like the asteroid part, were pretty memorable.

I really enjoyed it. Very immersive and not a chore to play. Glad to see a shooter that steered away from headshots and created combat that makes you think before shooting.

SPOILER!!!:

I agree with you about the showdown. Wasn't expecting to see a sequence like that. It felt like something out of a movie.

I can't stand the controls. It's slow/laggy. One other thing that kills me is the way they limited the viewing field. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but 3rd person view in this game gives you the impression that you're playing with your weapon in zoomed mode (that's the best way I can describe it). I know they did it to limit your viewing field, to create scary momements and let necros sneak up on you, but it really annoys me.
I'll probably go back to it, once i get bored of Far Cry, but then RA3 and Fall Out are on the way. . .

I didn't have that impression. Maybe because I'm playing in 16:10.

And for the record, i play on the PC and when i turned vsync off and cranked my G9 all the way up to 3200DPI it worked great!

loving it so far, very atmospheric and jumpy. after the initial disappointment of not being able to rebind movement to the arrow keys (its not the sort of game you want to find yourself fumbling around with the controls) ive took to it like a duck to water. no problems with v-sync, mouse, perspective etc. looks great, plays amazing, so far so good....
