I haven't kept up with computer components recently because I don't really need to buy any, but wow, I was just searching newegg today and:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145260&cm_sp=ProductSpotlight-_-20-145-260-_-01252011

4GB of DDR3 1600 MHz? It cost me $50 a year and a half ago to get 2GB of DDR2 800Mhz (same company as the RAM I linked--> Corsair)

One of the monitors I was looking at just last year has gone from $320 to $229 too, a 25.5" 1920x1200 screen.

Maybe one day gaming PCs will cost like 1-2 hundred dollars... one can only hope.

I bought my 4gb kit for $35 with a $10 rebate back in 2008. Ram has gone way up in price and is now starting to get cheap again. But it is nice to see 8gb of DDR3 for $80 now.

RayvinAzn, actually no. I built my gaming PC in early 2007 and aside from a graphics card upgrade and a RAM upgrade I haven't been keeping up much with PC component advances. Why do I get the feeling 10-20% of the gamespot community consists of smart***es?

I know computer components are getting cheaper as new tech comes out, but when I haven't looked in a while I am pretty surprised as to how much the price of some of them has dropped.

Although, apparently the price of the RAM I have hasn't dropped much: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145184&cm_re=corsair_xms2_4gb_%282_x_2gb%29_240-pin_ddr2_sdram_ddr2-_-20-145-184-_-Product

Still $70 for 4GB of DDR2?

RAM prices have dropped like no ones business. I paid $200 (CAD) for 8GB last summer, and now its half that like half a year later. Heck back in 05 I paid $140 for 1GB DDR2. Was about the cheapest I could find at the time.

Hey guys i'm building a new rig but i'm not sure if I should get a 2x2g or just one 4g? What is the difference anyways? A 4g to me seems better because it just gives me an extra slot to buy another 4g when I save up some more cash.

Yeah, I looked at some ram last week on newegg and was quite surprised to find that 2GB of DDR3 can be had for 35$. Crazy how it was 50$ just months ago. Tempting too!

They get cheaper rather quickly.

DDR3 is getting cheap because it is the most common form of memory now. DDR2 is retaining some of its cost because it is less in demand.

Doesnt this seem like a better buy than the Corsair series and considering its brand. I mean they seem to have the same capabilities but the G.SKILL seems to have a better user rating. Plus if i'm not mistaken but G.SKILL is like the Cadillac of ram.

both are really great brands, perhaps a slight edge to Gskill for being almost flawless with reliability though and they do have the highest ratings of any RAM maker on Newegg at least, but still both really are fantastic brands :D

2007? Yeah, you're new to PC hardware. I don't even consider myself old-school and my first build was a Pentium III. Do you think 64MB of RAM cost less than a cent back in the days when that much was good for a machine? Hardware requirements and prices always hover around a particular sweet spot, generally around $800-$1200 for a box. Sometimes it can spike lower or higher (usually no more than $200 in either direction) depending on where in product cycle launches we are, but that's been standard since graphics cards were a must for gamers. We're not going to see the day when $200 can build you a good gaming machine, period. Hell, the OS alone will eat up half that budget.

Sorry that I'm not a hardware god like you. I thought you were talking about not having any experience with PC hardware, not how long I've kept up with it.

Also, I didn't say you were going to get a gaming PC for $200 in 5 years, all I said was "the future". There has to be a point at which technological advancement slows down. They won't be able to shrink transistors on a CPU die much longer; Intel has said themselves that around 16nm is the fundamental limit for current transistor technology. There has got to get to a point where the hardware for computers is going to keep exceeding what is necessary for what the vast majority of people do with their computers.

My phone cost 200 bucks and I can play angry birds on it.

It's about as powerful as the old pentium 2 systems, even has as much storage space.

wookieeassassin

Sorry but computer will never get down to that pricepoint, because the simple act of making the components will cost more than that, especially with inflation.

With computers you'll get about double for your money every couple years. (some parts move forward faster than others)

If you factor inflation into stuff it makes everything way too complicated to talk about future prices. Just take the purchasing power of $200 now and use that as a meter. But yes, it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Or ever.

The closest you'll see is smart phones and tablets and netbooks.

When I bought my rig it was $35 for 2GB DDR2. For some reason though a little while after that RAM prices skyrocketed (not just DDR3, but DDR2 as well). Seems like they are just now coming down again.

Something new always crops up - Moore's Law will likely prove useless soon, but something as large as the PC hardware business isn't likely to just shut down. New processes will be found to create top-end hardware. A few different solutions have already been examined in fact, although I don't think we're likely to see them in mass-production for quite some time.

I highly doubt it.

EDIT:

To elaborate, here is an article explaining how RAM - Based SSDs were dying out in 2006.

http://storagemojo.com/2006/10/19/ram-based-ssds-are-toast-yippie-ki-yay/

It is simply not cost efficient and RAM based SSDs must be continually powered to retain their data.

Um what? The PC market is a constantly progressing market. Everything is getting cheaper because there are products constantly outperforming them. HDD are the same as RAM, CPUs, GPUs, the whole shabang. They are always being made obsolete a year or two later, so of course they all come down in price.

Newegg has -15% on all ram. You can get 4gb ram of $30. Thats amazingly cheap. 4gb ram 2 years ago was expensive as hell. 4 years ago it cost a fortune!

The same thing happened with DDR2 prices in early 2008, they have gone back up again and it's DDR3 which is enjoying cheap rates now.

I remember paying £90 for 2x 1GB DDR2 crucial ram some time ago, then I paid £60 for my current setup that has 2x 2GB Kingston DDR2. Its going cheaper as well as hard drives... 1TB 7200RPM Samsung for £40?! and 2x 2GB DDR3 1600 for £40?!
