Technically your not limited by watttage you woud be limited by physical size of the case. Some optiplexs I have seen are those tiny desktops while some have been normal mid size towers. Which do you have ?

It's the midsize tower Im pretty sure. It's the size of a regular desktop but just a little bit thinner (just as tall and deep though) The PSU in it now is an awful 108watt one. I want to upgrade the PSU so I can put a graphics card in it.

no matter what graphics card you get, it will be SEVERELY bottlenecked by your Pentium 4. You would end up spending around $300 to upgrade your cpu, psu, and gpu. dell optiplex's suck. we have them at school not to mention you'd have to upgrade your ram. I'm sorry, but don't expect to play any modern games. Get at least a duo 3 ghz, a nvidia 9 series, 2-4 gig ram, and then like a cooler master 600 watt psu.

I'm probably going to put an extra gig of ram in it (that will make it 1.5 gig) and a mid range grphics card (enough to play games like HL2 and Guild wars on it. How can I find out what type of PSU I can get? Fixing it up for my daughters.

ok, I had the impression you were getting for modern gaming. If your daughter's aren't going to be playing any games within the past couple years then that setup should do ok, just don't expect max graphics. Now that I see your intentions, you could buy an 9500 GT or card like that for around 70-80 bucks, 2 gigs of ram is only $30, and a new psu, around $50. get minimum 550 watt for about $50. I don't know what your case looks like, I am just assuming you have a big one :)

Dell computers require a special type of PSU that is compatible with Dell motherboards. PC Power and Cooling sells them, just search "Dell compatible PSU" to make sure you find one that will work.
