As long as the demo is a published game by a known developer you shouldn't have any issues. If it is a private developer or individual Indy game, or you are downloading from a unknown site it wouldn't hurt to take a minute and scan it. Worst case scenario would be that a virus was added by someone if you download from a private site or torrent.

Some .exe files show up as viruses on occasion, but if you know that the game is valid I wouldn't worry about it.

The only problem I've had recently was Project Snowblind which I got off of Steam. The game had Sony's securom protection scheme even in the demo which installs itself as a running process and it pretty much **** me off. Some demos especially by Codemaster have Starforce included, which IMO is worse than a virus.

Yeah Gamershell has been around a while and I'd consider it safe. You can also get the demo from Steam which really has become a nice service and is getting alot of developer support lately including I.D. Software and THQ. Alot of demos and cheap games to download as well. Just stay away from Project Snowblind.

Whether or not it is in a Zip doesn't matter. I would only download demos from trusted sites.

Thats why I download them here.

Always scan your downloads with an updated virus scan. Downloading the file won't give you a virus, but running it might! Gamershell is a legit site, but even they could get hacked or be duped into hosting an infected file.

fileplanet is the best site for d/l content. Just sign up for Fileplanet membership it only costs 10 bucks.....plus you get into free beta's ALL the time....like today I just signed up for the CoH Opposing Fronts beta because I'm a Fileplanet Member. I'm in the Quake Wars Enemy Territory both beta 1 and 2 from using Fileplanet. It's the best.

I second that on Fileplanet - it's a great site. I am NOT a paying member, so sometimes I have to wait in line to download files, BUT when the downloads start, they'll run at several megaBYTES per second (sweet!!!).

I third the call for FilePlanet. They are great even if you only go with the FREE account. Safe files and good download speeds (may have to qait in line though)

If you are willing to spend a few extra bucks you will get to avoid waiting in line for downloads and have access to exclusive beta offers. Right now I am playing the Tabula Rasa beta and the QuakeWars beta thanks to FilePlanet!
