Anyone ever played Descent:Freespace? I tried to install it yesterday after a loong time, and couldn't get it running... While installing the game everything looked ok, but when I tried to start it up, nothing happened... Not even an error message, nothing. Like I didn't even click it... I have windows Vista, so that might be the problem... Did any of you tried to play it on Vista?

There is a mod for Descent Freespace 2, that "ports" the first game completely... I did everything as mentioned in the guide here http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Installing_FreeSpace_2_Open.... The game works, so the OpenFreespace 2 program is working. Everything is fine, it recognizes the mod under the MOD tab, but the option won't show in game. I'm supposed to go to "Campaign" menu and choose the freespace 1 mod, but it won't show... I tried just playing the game normally, but I get an error message saying I should change the campaign...

Has anyone suceded in making the game work?

I had a super headache getting it to work even on XP....so with Vista I don't think you should bother...

Aw man! :(
But I'm so close... If I could just get it to show up in the campaign menu...

I know what you mean by that, I've spent the entire day setting it up... Uninstalling it, installing again, patching with different patches, different programs and no luck...

To tell u the truth, it took me a few days to get it working on XP....and then I didn't like the game.

At the end of the day, you have to weigh all that time spent against a new game.... there are really good space sims out at the moment better than Freespace2...

Yeah, I guess you're right... It's not that good anyway...

But I kinda like the whole "Target subsistems", "disable engines" thingy :P

Can you reccomend some to me then? :)

I remember there was this one game, where you started as a convict aboard the prison ship. Someone offered you a job and you started with clearing the asteroids, and then moved up the ladder. You received money after each mission to buy your freedom. It was a cool game, played the demo, but I can't remember the name...

Yeah, it's not working... It does make a small difference, for example the menu now says "Freespace Port V3" and everything else is the same...

It's weird, if I try to play without setting the campaign, I get stuck on the first mission where I have to fire the weapon, and I'm unarmed and in the wrong ship type :D

I played the game via Freespace SCP not too long ago and encountered no problems:

I suggest you give the game another try, it's clearly my favorite "space sim". There are not that many newer alternatives around, but if you want to try another one, Darkstar One and Independence War 2 (both available at www.gog.com) might be worth a try.

Install The Freespace II Source Code Project and run the game from the new executables that the SCP installs (in your games install folder default C:GamesFreeSpace2fred2_open_3_6_10.exe) The game should work on Newer OS's. It works fine for me in Win7x64 but a default installation of FS2 just gave me a D3D error of some kind.

EDIT: Never mind I misread your post because im a noob.
