I am playing it, and while in some ways its really good, many things are making it hard for me to get into it. I am just curious if I am the only one and if I am judging it too soon. I am not that far, I am roming the streets after I get off the subway and I am in the pub and so forth. I just feel like it is HORRIBLY dated and I know a lot of games are that are this old, but I feel games like counterstrike and Ocarina of Time hold up over the years. Maybe it is just my preferences.

No I don't. I appreciate it for what it brought to games, but as far as actually playing the game, I didn't like it too much then and I don't like it too much now.

It's probably my favorite PC game, and one of the best games of all time. And don't let people tell you it's nostalgia - I've only played it within the last 2 years. Have probably put 50+ hours into that game. Everything about it is amazing. There are so many things in this game that could only be discovered with multiple play throughs. Gets better every time I play it, honestly. I also have to mention how killer the soundtrack is. It's killer.

I didn't like it at all. Tried playing it multiple times. Bland and boring IMHO. On an aside... Ocarina of Time has not held up very well imho. Not from a gameplay point of view, but because of a simple technical flaw that kills me when I try playing it again. The pop-in distance for all the characters/enemies in the game is insanely short. Unplayably short imho... Which is why I'm thrilled about the upcoming remake on the 3DS. The sequel Majora's Mask thankfully is not so afflicted, having a very acceptable character pop-in distance AND much improved textures..

Ah, I forgot to add that, yes, Deus Ex IS horribly dated these days... my last attempt at playing it was fairly recent. Once in a while I'll come back to something I dismissed and find my tastes or ability to appreciate or whatever has changed. Well this time I felt nothing but disgust for the horrible muddy, blocky ugliness that is Des Ex. Empty environments, uninteresting narrative (at least at the beginning... and I had no will to move beyond that), the gameplay... there was just nothing there for me. I just felt immensely depressed, lol.

Awesome on both single player and multiplayer.

People just seem to have high graphical standards. I played through Ocarina of Time recently and it plays just fine. Sure it has a low framerate and pop-in, but it's certainly not bad enough to make the game unplayable. But I guess this is the type of person that wouldn't like Deus Ex. No attention span whatsoever. If people say something is good, I'd at least play it thoroughly before arriving at the conclusion that it isn't good. Otherwise I'd feel like I'm just some random hater.

I'm not going to waste my time, thank you very much. My concession to the masses was how many times I did indeed try getting into the game. I might have less tolerance for certain things than others, but I like to think this stems from a more discerning attention rather than the deficient span of one.

Objectively the best game of all time. It's funny, because people take for granted just how innovative it is. I know I did for quite some time, but that didn't stop me from loving it. When I found out just how critically acclaimed it was, I realised exactly what it was that made me enjoy it, making me love it even more. There is no denying that it has its flaws, some major, some minor; that's a given when you develop a game of such magnitude. However, when you look at how games like Invisible War, Alpha Protocol and STALKER fell short, it makes you realise what a miracle Deus Ex is.

the graphics are extremely dated yes, the gameplay is also pretty dated.

But, the atmo and story in this game is more immersive and superior then any other modern story-oriented game.

So comparing deus-ex with counter strike is absolutly ridiculous, because its completely diffrent (cs: good shooting mechanics and no story, deus ex: bad shooting mechanics and an unbelievable good story)

People who don't like deus-ex are (according to me) people who don't really have any interest in story/atmo in games but only care about gameplay mechanics and graphics.

Its like people who read books (deus ex) and people who watch movies (cs), one is not superior to the other because both can be very good but its something completely diffrent. you can ofc enjoy books AND movies!

Loved it. But there is one thing that sucked in this otherwise perfect game. The ridiculously innacurate weapons. Seriously, it was horrible, take one stop forward and the aim you build up by standing still for 5 seconds is gone!!

I loved the game, played and completed it for the first time in 2009. Graphics maybe are dated, but the art design is good. Gameplay I think is still good and many new games dont match the level of the gameplay of Deus Ex. It is a fun game, best part is the story imo. Definitely one of the best games I have ever played. Guns might not be accurate, but it is based on RPG system... so you have to upgrade your skills to become more accurate with weapons you use. Or just use melee, like I did. So I have big hopes for Deus Ex 3 (which is set 25 years prior to Deus Ex 1 events).

My advice to you is try to push beyond the earlier stages. If you haven't been to at least Hong Kong than you aren't judging Deus Ex by it's strengths and rather it's weaknesses. The latter of course is much more prominent in this date than it was, but the former is still very much the same quality it was when it was first released.

I don't love it. I'm not a fan of cyberpunk, the voice acting is ridiculous, the pacing is very bad and some gameplay mechanics are atrocious. It is a good game, but System Shock and Thief are much better.

If you aren't going to 'waste your time' with game recommendations, then why play the game in the first place? Obviously you've never extended your attention span to give something different a try, or else you'd know by know how rewarding it is to judge things based on their entirety and not the first 30 minutes. What would you have done with that 'wasted time'. Play other videogames?

Have you maxed out your weapons skills, or atleast until Advanced? Or used some recoil/accuracy/snipe etc. modifications that you can buy in the game from various shops? The game isn't focused on killing people, but on the atmosphere, i believe.

I have absolutely no problem at all headshooting soldiers with my 10mm pistol on Advanced with a few modifications, be it on the move or not, on the Medium difficulty.. I'm re-playing it right now, 2-3 hours a day.

I think a lot of people hate the game because they simply hate the graphics, which are heavily dated, and don't know that Deus Ex is NOT a traditional shooter, but more of a cyber-punk stealth-action that focuses on its atmosphere and story. Oh yeah, some voices-actors are plain silly, but i love it, so funny.

i can understand kids not liking this game tough, games are all about graphics nowadays so it might get hard to get into deus ex for them

Deus Ex had laughably bad AI, blah visuals, blah shooting mechanics and horrid voice acting (Hong Kong...*shudder*). However, pretty much everything else in the game was brilliant.

The problem is that its extremely stupid in th begining and for many hours later. There is no diffirence in the amount of armed enemies you face in the begining or later on. Its just that you suck at shooting in the begining and you have to play more stealthy. I never understood that, why cant i play the way i want? So the problem is that its utter crap in the begining as far as shooting goes and even maxed out it STILL does not feel as solid of a fps as other games at each era. So its not about difficultiy or anything, its just that the shooting is stupid. So are the weapons. Seriously what pistol has 6 bullets in the future? Its stupid.

But it's also one of those games that I don't recommend to anyone anymore.

I think it's one of those love/hate games (as demonstrated by your poll), and in 2010 it's lot easier to hate it than to love it, so I'd rather not hear a bunch of complaints about graphics and what-not from the people I recommend it to. I will give this advice to anyone considering it, look at the screenshots before you buy the game because that's what you're getting. If you can't handle the way it looks in the screenshots, don't even bother.

Oh that's fair, play a 10 year old game and accuse it of being dated. The game was great for its time, you had to be there. Now that you are late for the party, don't spoil it for the others. And your point about Counterstrike holding up, I doubt you would say that now if there never was a Source reboot of it. Perhaps if Deus Ex was remade on a new engine, you would be singing a different tune.

Loved it. My favorite games are usually those that accommodate for different play styles, and Dues Ex does that marvelously. The gunplay isn't great, but given the scope of the game its forgivable. The game also has a good story, some really cool missions, and great stealth, something that has been absent in genre-hybrids for far too long (except for maybe Batman AA)

Haha its not even about the graphics for me. I am not too far, but it seems rather bland and has archaic gameplay. Maybe its just me. I realize it is old, but I didnt first play MGS1 until a year ago and that game is a couple years older than Deus Ex, and so far I find it to be superior (my opinion). I realize that Deus Ex is more of an RPG than MGS, which makes me think I would love it, but certain things are bothering me I guess. In an RPG I want to feel cool when I level stuff up, and rather it seems the list of stuff to level is quite...uninteresting. I dont even get how I am awarded points for walking around into rooms :P. The gunplay is so slow and innacurate, and the movement makes you bob like you are a booie :P. I know I am crapping on it alot, but I can see why people love it, I just wish I could do. I am shocked I am not so far cause I love RPG's. The game reminds me of Perfect Dark, Half Life, and Metal Gear Solid in one RPG package.

w

ell, lets not generalize everything. First of all it does not take few shots in deus ex to bring someone down. Fallout 3 has done the "damage based" rpg aspect very well but my complain with deus ex is how the crosshair spreads wide open once you take one step forward. It could be done in a diffirent way that it becomes less wide when you walk or crouch and not constantly open every time you take a step forward no matter how slowly, till it finally spreas wide open.

Also standing still for 5 seconds for the crosshair to become small enough to actually hit something was stupid. Invisible war was just plain stupid because you could not do headshots either. So it was all about shoot, shoot and pause to heal the damage the npcs caused you, then go back into shooting endlessly till they die.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing through it my first time 3 years ago. (It was still pretty old then). Once I got past the liberty island tutorial level things picked up greatly, and it wasn't until I started reloading saves and trying different approaches to tackling a situation that I noticed the flexibility and complexity in this game that you rarely, if ever see in today's games.

Yeah, the graphics thing wasn't really directed towards you, just other people I've talked to about it in general. I think complaining about the graphics is silly when it's pretty easy to look at some screenshots and see what you're getting into... it shouldn't be a shock that it doesn't look amazing, especially since it came out 10 years ago and at that time it wasn't a visual masterpiece either.

As for MGS being superior to Deus Ex in the gameplay department, I don't agree with that. The ai is almost just as "simple", the gunplay in both isn't exceptional (but the shooting never bothered me in Deus Ex as I became "advanced" or a "master" with the weapons I used), and the stories/characters, to me, are both interesting. So overall, I think they are about even on technical merits. I guess MGS gets the upper hand with voice acting... but as far as gameplay goes I don't think it has any major advantage. Maybe I just played Deus Ex so much in the past that the weird shooting mechanics aren't "weird" to me anymore. And so, in my mind "bad shooting" is never a complaint, but I guess I can see why others don't like it.

I wish you could enjoy it the way I did (because I liked it a lot and still do), but it's not up to me to change your feelings on it... I don't think my words or anyone else's words can change your feelings about it, so I guess we'll just have to leave it at that. In the end, there's not a single game on this planet that will satisfy everyone. And that's just something we have to accept.

i just played it a bit again a few weeks ago. still better than anything released since imho. it is butt ugly...it was ugly at launch and it hasnt aged well at all. its journal system could also be greatly improved. the liberty island part is also a bit boring (though ive played it so many times that i can complete very quickly now :) ). the voice acting is also patchy (especially in hong kong). but those are pretty much its only probs. its RPG system is very well integrated into the game (if you have no skill in an area then your going to be crap in that area. its an RPG...duh). everything it does it does very well. whether its stealth, shooting (if you have the skills) or choice/consequence.....the game is a masterclass in it. it rewards for completing objectives rather than killing things which allows the player to tackle problems as they see fit. just a fantastic game.

what! 58 people hated it?! That was unexpected. I suppose the same would be the case with Half-Life 2, Crysis, Call of Duty as well...chandu83
Not weird at all. I asked alot of people in general games forum and system wars and there is indeed a respectable amount ofpeople who hated hl2. As for cod? All you have to do is visit a thread with the cod's name in system wars. The polls will strongly support every other game, even halo and cod will be last. :P

But a warning, some of the missions will get a hell of a lot more complicated, not all, just a few.

Although I started gaming like around five years ago, I have to say because of my high intellect I am able to enjoy the game to such an extent that I place it high on the top of the list of the best games I have ever played. I understood that graphics don't mean a thing, and that story and gameplay are the main building blocks of an enjoyable game. The story is mind blowing, and this all just made me love the game much more. Just my two cents.

Planing to start again, loved it back then. Finding a graphical mod for it would be a good thing, the game didn`t age well.

Surprising number of people who outright hated Deus Ex. Personally I view it as a seminal moment in video games, and certainly one of the finest games ever. It didn't do everything right and a lot of what it tried to do was sometimes frustrating, but it is one of a few games who have really tried to allow the player multiple ways to accomplish a given objective. Add to that a detailed and involving storyline across numerous locations, and it was definitely ahead of its time.

I think it's only natural for something that gets a lot of praise to also get a lot of hate. And this applies to more than just games.

It's funny because if the game wasn't as popular or well-praised as it is, I bet a lot of people would hate it less because they'd care less. Some people might not like it, but the fact that others do is what makes them condemn it more than they should.

It's by far the best game I've ever played. Do I need to say more?

Unless you're able to take a time machine back to the year 2000, you'll never be able to truly appreciate what Deux Ex is. Luckily, I was able to play the game back around when it launched and can confidently say that it's one of my all time favourites. The same goes with System Shock 2 and the first Half-Life; most new comers would just assume those games are too old and suck.

Everyone isn't going to love it, despite the praise the game has received over the decade Never the less it is a grand game, a staple of the medium, and has surprisingly aged very well. It has it's issues; visuals dated (unreal 1 ftw), the combat really isn't satisfying and the limitations of the narrative funnelling you along show, oh and the voice acting is utterly terrible at times(I spilt my drink!). However. Damn it is good, especially for a game over ten years old. Also The Nameless mod is excellent, if you like Deus Ex it is a must play.

I started playing it for the first time this year. I still haven't finished it, but I love it. The graphics are dated, but the game play and atmosphere are excellent. I like how open the game is; you can complete objectives in multiple, imaginative ways. After completing a particular part of the game, I'll often read a walkthrough and it's surprising how many variables there are. Usually, I will have missed something and often times I will have completed the mission in a different way than the walkthrough suggests.

I am almost in hong kong. The game is no doubt picking up and I am actually quite enjoying it. I think the game has a few too many problems though to be considered the godly game everyone says it is :P. I think a up to date version of Deus Ex would be great if it ever comes out...oh wait :P. I know most people say its going to suck, but I think it will be better overall. Maybe that is just me. The body mods seem (I have not actually used them :P) kind of lame. It is like crysis but it has the annoying charge that depletes and doesnt seem to regen? I guess I never get into leveling like that haha. That is just me though. I would prefer some cooler skills that are passive or I can use whenever.

Body mods? Augmentations? :P

Well, if you spend your time searching around, you'll find plenty of augmentations, which are like passive skills that can be used any time, BUT, they do use bio energy, so you have to be wise wen to use them.

I got one that regenerates my health (ofc. after i deplete my bio energy i can't use that particular skill, but that bio-energy can be refilled any time with potion-like stuff that you can find around, as you know, just like mana in a fantasy rpg)

That doesn't make you invincible though. One headshot from the enemy, and you're gone.

There are a great number of fantastic augmentations that you can use.. the problem is finding them, though there are shops around for you to buy them.

I thought it was a good game, but the reason its praised so much around here is obvious nostalgia. Honestly, these kinds of games are much more dated then they are made out to be.
