Deus Ex Stealth Help

I'm just starting Deus Ex and I can't figure out how to knock people out in one hit. I sneak up behind them unnoticed, then hit them in the head with my baton, but then they run off screaming. Is there a way to one-hit KO people in this game?

Well if you dont upgrade the meele weapons....no, but you can use the riot prod, one hit will stun them and a second will kill them from what i can remember.

Yeah I remember doing a lot of riot-prodding at the beginning of the game. I also think you can use some of the smoke grenades to knock them out.

the baton is...well, I wont say its useless, but its pretty pointless

use the prod, its a two hit knockout from behind right off the bat, and I think after you upgrade it to the third level it is a one-hit stun...two if you run up to them and do it.

oh, I almost forgot: pepper spray first, then use the baton...that works better

Stealthing is helped if you chose the mini-crossbow as the extra weapon Paul offers you, since it offers another means of non-lethal takedown aside from the riot prod. Also, you can take out guys at a distance and then just let them run around in a panic before they fall unconscious.

Use the riot prod. As long as you sneak up undetected from the back of an NPC it will knock them out in one hit every time (although I have noticed that if you hit a limb sometimes it takes two hits). If you are detected it takes two hits which is still pretty good considering that the first still immobilizes them. The sniper rifle is also pretty good. Aim for the head (specifically the upper back 2/3 of it) and it's a one hit kill every time. If you can get a silencer on the sniper rifle it practically breaks the game since you can take out enemies from any distance undetected (this becomes extremely handy btw once you get into the second half of the game and encounter some heavy armor super soldiers and agents who explode upon death). There's also a sword you'll get about half-way through the game or so which will become the only melee weapon you'll ever need since it deals out as much damage per hit as a rocket launcher. Obviously that makes stealth (and really the entire game) much easier. Finally, there is the mini crossbrow but I don't like it. Too inaccurate, not powerful enough, and the tranq darts take way too long to work. For the record though, a lot of the NPCs in this game (at least in the beginning) can be left alone if you're skilled at sneaking around and finding hidden routes. Also, if you're still on the liberty island level just try to make it to the top of the statue as once you talk to the guy up there that will trigger the army to come in and kill all the hostiles on the map.

Not useless, its the best meele weapon at that time, better than the crowbar and the knife.
