Do it, it's well worth it.
Also, theres the chance of D3 being revealed today. If that happens, im sure loads of old Diablo players, including myself, will come back. But if it doesn't, theres still a great community :P
spend $30 on it. it's well worth your time and money!!!fireandcloud
Seconded. The number of times I've come back, reinstalled or simply "rolled" a new character out surpass any of my other games by and large.
Also worth considering would be the Titan Quest collection (eg: the game and the expansion). The story wasn't as good, imho, but it did bring with it some improvements, such as the ability to buy back otherwise mis-spent skill points. Also, the ability to combine skill trees was a nice addition for building a somewhat more customized class to your personal tastes.
Seriously, though, Diablo II was just freakin' awesome. Get the expansion pack with it, though, so you get the full experience form the start (the extra items, char. classes, etc.). That game simply blew me away when it hit, and after all these years, it's one of the (very) few that still has me coming back for more.
Hmm, alright I guess those are solid enough answers, I will purchase Diablo 2 tomarrow!
(and I am selling GTA4 for it, holy crap big dissapointment...)

Tonite, look at some FAQs, seriously. Some of the skills are pretty decent, but a the same time, they have a cap when it comes to usefulness. Nothing is worse than dropping a few hard earned points into one skill with little return only to unlock another and find out those skill points would've been better spent there (once again, something Titan Quests buy-back system greatly improved upon. But also, once again, the story just wasn't as good.) This can be easil;y avoided by looking up a few skill point FAQs and seeing what you (personally) think is worthwhile. Always good to plan ahead with DII:D

Heh, been there. The first guy I rolled was going to be a jack-of-all-trades gunner.......yeah, that bit me in the butt about half-way through:P
DII is not that bad, but there can, feasibly, be a point when think "well......f***! I totally should've poured those points into skill "x" rather than "y". Did that with a necromancer and that skeleton summoning skill (great for cannon fodder, useless otherwise)
Funny, I actually reinstalled D1, D2 and D2:LoD today. :| Ill be replaying them all if its announced. Sorta like I did for MGS4.Do it, it's well worth it.

I just played the demo and gory-wise, its about as bloody as a 3year old's drawing of a squished tomato. Great game I am sure, but nothing to worry about gore-wise.

yeah, it's pretty gory. it's got impaled people and blood and limbs and so on. so if your mom's gonna see you play it and disapprove of it, i'd advice you to stay away from it. or play it secretly. :D
or try titan quest - it features very, very similar gameplay without the gore.

I don't really think it's a bad idea to do whatever when you first start. After your first character, then you can really go from there and then decide a build. Also, there isn't really a lot of "little return" skills - it's always good for a single-tree character to go for one main skill (Blizzard, Hammerdin, summon Nec) and pump the synergies up.
Does armor show up cosmetically?36O

Diablo 2 is a landmark game that anyone interested in character development should play, and even seven years later it is still the finest example of a hack 'n' slash rpg that may never be bettered (even by Diablo 3), but I think anyone who gets in on something just because it's connected to something recent and mainstream are jerks.
Like people who read books based on movies shortly after the movie comes out. All jerks.
You should play Diablo 2, though - but if you're going to get it, get the expansion, too. It adds so much goodness.
