Diablo 3 uses cel shading to makes it look like it's some sort of drawing or painting...

...While Titan Quest goes for a realistic look.

This thread is not really about the two games but their approach to graphics. What do you like better? I strongly prefer realistic unless the game has a sty1e I like, I've always hated how WoW looked but I am loving how Diablo 3 is turing out (and it's pretty much just a darker WoW with blood and gore).

Something I strongly disagree with on the people who choose Diablo 3's approach is that they think along the lines of; "Over time TQ's graphics will get worst and worst while D3's graphics will stand the test of time." I actually like to slowly see realistic graphics become uglier, it really gives you a sense about how far technology is progressing. And no matter how outdated the graphics, good gameplay will useally over come it. Playing a game that has good play but very outdated realistic grahpics has a special charm in my eyes. And BTW games with graphics like D3 are just using shadings to make it look drawn, they're using the same kind of textures in realistic games, so they WILL get outdated overtime (especiallyif you're not wooed by the anime looks like me) it is just harder to notice.

Which do you prefer and why?

I like both. Diablo 3 looks busier, with a lot more stuff on screen and better physics. I have one complaint: the use of colour filters. You rarely see proper blacks and I'm not a fan of painting the entire screen in one faint purple/yellow/whatever shade to create moody environments.

Titan Quest is simply amazing. Iron Lore had fantastic artists... except for whoever was in charge of the spells, because those never felt powerful. The use of colour was especially great, everything pops out of the screen. I like the ragdolls, but they missed a huge opportunity by not making it gory.

Titan Quest has really nice graphics, but they're like from 2006. I'm sure Blizzard will up the ante.

Diablo looks smoother, cleaner, and more consistent, Blizz' animations are always lovely, spell effects are also much better looking.

Also, Titan Quest's name is silly, vs the wonderful name Diablo, so clearly, based on my logic, Diablo is the superior game 8)

I'm not really seeing the "anime" look (I wish it were like that but it's not since it's not cell shaded) we're also way beyond that "game X will stand the test of time" talk, that was used in the last decade when games weren't really much to look at, the artistic games were still interesting several years later but it isn't the case nowadays when most games look good and no matter how much time passes they'll still look good enough not to make you sick because of the quality compared to newer games.

TQ looks good and will continue to look good, Diablo 3 is the same, it will never get old, unlike D2 that is more like an ancient relic.

I like both kinds but I prefer games that look interesting, not just good, for that reason I choose D3, artistic is always better than monotonous imo.

Titan quest has a distinct artistic st yle with a great balance of colours, its not realistic in the least. Its very appealing to my eyes, and i think it'll forever be appealing because of this.

Anyway, a realistic approach doesn't have any charm to me, as it gets older.. it'll look like crap in my eyes and force me to mod it, and that's what happens with 3D visuals that try to be realistic. They age horrifically.

I prefer a artistic st yle that is appealing to me eyes, and Diablo III looks like a painting in motion, A.K.A beautifull, which will be a cherry on top of the ageless addicting gameplay.

They'll get better. Look at GTA IV on consoles now, that tried to have a realistic st yle. That is ugly as heck, in all honestly, it looks horrible beyond words.

Depends, GTA IV looks amazing to me (on PC of course, it looks washed out on consoles and mods ehance it even further, they also add AA on PC), for a game to look horrible nowadays, it'd have to be something that can compete with Big Rigs in terms of success and that is hard, very.

This is kind of unfair. Seeing as how Titan Quest is almost 5 years old. If Diablo 3 doesn't look miles better, then its failed already.

They both look good.

But you should be comparing the graphics to GRIM DAWN this is the next Titan quest (same people) http://www.grimdawn.com/media_screenshots.php

I like the graphics to Grim dawn alot and the gameplay.

Titan Quest looks like it's going to have better graphics technically, though I'm sure Diablo will look great given the new art style.

Titan Quest looks great for its time but no where near as good as Diablo 3. And I think most of the screenshots we've seen of Diablo 3 are in its earlier stages. I'm sure the final product will look much sharper and refined. To me, even Torchlight looks better than Titan Quest, even if you want to start the visual art style argument. Titan Quest doesn't look that great when compared to other modern day game. The game is great though.

True, but they should also avoid being (visually) like Crackdown 2 though. :-P

Cel shading looks nice. Unless you're going for a perfectly sharp, crisp realistic look, cel shading seems to be the answer.

Tbh I'm slightly concerned about Diablo III's graphics. Either they haven't been releasing very high definition shots/videos, or it's starting to look dated before it even gets released. The stuff they're showing now looks the same quality as it did four years ago, and that's a problem. Yet another issue with taking six years to develop a game...

Diablo 3 is NOT cel shaded. Just because it uses a "painterly" art style doesn't make it cel shaded. I think both styles fit both games. I don't care what sort of graphical technique a company uses as long as the art direction fits. And both games are well suited their respective art styles.

I think TQ has some nicer textures, while D3 makes better use of environmental effects (like the sand blowing, ect). Overall I'd say D3 looks better...it has a really polished look. Kinda sad we are even having this conversation though lol...I mean TQ is from 2006 and from a mid-sized developer while Blizzard is one of the most successful game companies on earth. I kinda wish they put a little more emphasis on D3's graphics to be honest. Don't get me wrong, I think the game is going to be awesome and I think the graphics are fine (the effects are excellent), I just think it could be better.

Blizzard = #1 company that knows how to develop a game and make it successful gameplay and replayability wise, even though graphics lack (according to some people, I disagree with them)... higher polycount doesn't mean it's more nice to look at 100% of the time, imo :P. I have TQ and Diablo 2. TQ becomes SO boring and repetitive so fast, while I can't stop playing Diablo 2. Graphics aren't everything. Some of you guys need to also understand, Blizzard devs games that run great on a large range of hardware, hence more people buy their games, which results in more money. If I was in their shoes, I would do the same.

i think a fairer comparison is DoWII CR vs diablo 3

the engine is older eys but dowII is still visually a crisp game. and offers a similar perspective of the game world

I have always been a big fan of Blizzard's art decisions so they definetely get my vote. I never understood the obseession of some people that all games are supposed to look "realistic". Not all genres should go for that look. Style > Realisim anyday.
