After watching countless videos, listening to many podcasts, reading pages upon pages of game info....I've come to the conclusion that Diablo 3 will be the next big gaming phenomenon, ala World of Warcraft. Here's why:

1: Diablo 3 will attract not only the hordes of Diablo fans eagerly anticipating the next release of their favorite franchise, but it will more than likely absorb tons of World of Warcraft fans that are looking for a new persistent dungeon crawling experience, but don't want to commit to another MMO. WoW is getting pretty old at this point, so many WoW players (like myself) are desperate for something new they can sink their teeth into.

This means that Diablo 3 may already have a user base in the millions just between Diablo fans and World of Warcraft cast offs...this isn't counting new players that will be intrigued when D3 dominates their conversations much like WoW did years ago.

2: The real money AH will become a cultural topci of debate if Diablo 3 takes off like I think it does. Think about this for a moment: Gamers are already willing to spend hundreds of hours of their lives on computer games like Diablo for nothing but digital rewards and self gratification. Now, those same gamers can spend the same amount of time playing a game like Diablo 3...but now they have the ability to make REAL money?

Of course the idea of making money on games like Diablo isn't new...but now it's going to be 100% legit in the eyes of Blizzard, and will face no penalties for making money off their work in game.

People will be able to support themselves off Diablo 3, guaranteed. Or at least the idea of paying ones rent while playing a video game will keep many gamers glued to their seats and clicking away on the D3 servers.

3: My final reason for Diablo 3 becoming the next big gaming meme to develop is simple: It looks like a damn good game to play. The graphics look slick. The combat is visceral. The amount of depth and customisation for each character is exponential with limited action slots and runes taken into account.

In addition, we all know that Blizzard will do everything in their power to tweak, upate, and improve their product...so a well optimized and well developed game is all but guranteed...something that can't be said for most game developers.

The above 3 factors are just a few that will cause Diablo 3 to blow up in World of Warcraft like fashion I believe. Their are many other factors as well, like the amount of social integration, the possibility of console ports, expansions and growth, and of course the sheer muscle that Blizzard possess to simply make a game succeed.

Of course these are all just my opinions, and it's definitely possible that Diablo 3 becomes nothing more than a fairly popular niche game and nothing more. But I have a feeling that Diablo 3 will become a gaming phenomenon in the same way World of Warcraft did years ago.

I honestly didn't read all that, and maybe I should have, but I am being lazy right now.

That being said, I am really looking forward to Diablo 3.

My sister and I have played Diablo since the first! So naturally she is waiting on it.

I got my GF into Titan Quest, and Diablo 2. She is also really looking forward to it.. ( can't wait for that 3 player coop)

So that is atleast 3 people I know personally that are really looking forward to it!

It looks good, but calling it a phenomenon is crazy on your part.

I don't think it's going to be the next WoW or anything. It will be popular, but not as big as you say.

The reason I think it's going to be an phenomenon is because of the widespread popularity I think it will enjoy.

Diablo 1 and 2 were the type of game you get some friends and finish it in a week stop and then stop playing for a year and repeat, unless they constantly make new dungeons and updates etc. for diablo 3 I don't see it being as huge as WoW or sc2 since there is no competitive scene as said by Jay Wilson. They also make it so there can only be 4 people in a game at a time that doesn't scream huge to me. Diablo 3 might have alot of people playing but you will never have that massive game feel ever, so speculating on how big it will be is a waste of time since it will not affect you or me.

Saying that people will be able to pay their rent just by playing D3 might be a bit of a stretch. I mean if your playing 60 hours a week then maybe, but I don't think the cost of rare items is going to be that crazy. and if it is the chances of finding enough to pay your rent is going to be quite difficult.

If you have a normal 40 hour a week job and can only really play the game 10-15 hours a week max, I don't think you are going to be able to make any significant money playing the game.

Having said all that, I am certainly excited about D3 and will probably waste a good amount of time this winter playing it! For myself I see the auction house as a way to sell some extra items to save up for something else I want for a character.

And those of us who don't grind will be blissfully playing other games, as usual. :)

I think that will not reach the Diablo II sales and lifespan.

The absence of atribute points and skill points to spent, the lack of runewords, the decimation of the number of runes and the number of players supported trounced to half makes it to look as a Fisher Price's watered down version of Diablo II, and the fact that any player with money would be able to take God Tier items just paying... Just the game lacks interest, no challenge.

Once you start to buy items as Enigma in Diablo II then the game just sudeenly lost any interest. In a game in which EVERYONE can access to the scarciest items in the game there's no much appeal. Is as if you use the Oblivion console comands to do whatecer you want (but a bit more expensive).

I bet for BF 3 or Guild Wars 2 as the next big things, plus Skyrrim in the single player department, of course.

Actually it may be bigger then WoW.. The monthly fee is a huge barrier for many.. Something Diablo 3doesn't have.. That being said I am cautious really about any game.. And really want to hear feed back from early reviews, official and unofficial.. And beta testing.. Figure thats the safest way to play for any game..

Thank god, as soon as a game is declared a "competitive game"...that's ALL it is. Every single aspect is absurdly micro managed and inspected and analyzed. It's supposed to be a more mindless, demon bashing, absurdly OP slaughter fest that's addictive as heroine. If some build is 1% more "efficient" than other builds it's whined about incessantly. I'm glad Jay Wilson flatly rebuked that one kid whining at Blizzcon during open mic questions who wanted them to make it a "competitive game".

it WILL be a phenomenon, but only on asian lands where grindfests are so loved

face it , diablo and games like those are nothing but a very entertaining grindfest that you enjoy with your friends or alone, unless they go the MMORPG route and keep releasing monthly patches with new dungeons, areas to explore and story development this game will have an ending and a boiling point in which people will get bored after a while

I disagree. I don't think D3 will be 'the next big thing' if we're looking at anything near the scale and scope of WoW. I think D3 will do well, it will sell well, it'll be an overall fun game. But it wont be anywhere near WoW in size. Personally I doubt that it'll manage to match SC2 since it lacks the competitive multi-player and e-sports appeal that's such a big factor for SC2. Also, unlike when D2 was released, D3 will be facing a host of competitors, some of whom have a lot of potential: Torchlight 2, Guild Wars 2, Grim Dawn. While I doubt that any of these will outsell D3, each of them will take a chink of D3's market share.

.. Devs and companies in general always like to hype their products to make it sound like its the next coming of christ.. Especially when it comes to those kinds of numerical claims..

Speak for yourself, me and my friends played Diablo2 for years on end, the first time beating the game is just the begining imo.

One of the few games we just loved playing over and over.

Based on what we have seen and their dwelling on multiplayer.. The one thin I am excited for is the new content they will definitelyr elease for the game in new patches.. Hell Diablo 2 was a pretty half assed attempt by Blizzard standards in supporting the game.. And even then they made huge patch changes and content additions to the game years later.
