Hey fellow PC gamers, I have a question.

Most of my friends have played, and beaten Diablo II, and they assure me it's one of the greatest games ever created. Now, I installed the demo and gave it a whirl....but I was not as impressed as I felt I should have been. Should I give it another try? Is the gameworld as immersive as, say, DA:O? What is the storyline?

I find that many of these older titles' awesomeness are exaggerated because of the nostalgic value to people who look back on the 'good old days' of gaming.

It was pretty damn impressive for the time. I'd say it's most like Witcher of this generation in the playstyle, except for having classes. It's a pretty long game, especially with LoD. It's pretty cheap now too, so you wouldn't be wasting much if you didn't like it. The lore is also quite cool.

Too old IMO, play Titan Quest + expansion instead, same type of game; but better than diablo (some would argue, but I would agree with OP about nostalgia being the problem)

Though, diablo is awesome, don't get me wrong. The music, lore, and gameplay still hold up. So, alternatively I would say yes, do play diablo lol.

Having played both extensively, I don't know how you can say TQ is garbage, at the very least it is on par with diablo 2.

If TQ is garbage so is diablo, though I suspect your comment is more related to nostalgia than anything else.

This, and Diablo 2 is meant to be played online. You can play the SP on your own, but you would miss the whole point of playing it.

TQ on par with Diablo 2

You complain about him "thinking" with nostalgia, I complain about you "thinking" with graphics, TQ doesn't even come close to Diablo 2. Definitely give it another try, also since many of your friends love it, then play online with them ;), Diablo is so fun in co-op that you even start to forget about the outdated graphics, which isn't the case in single player and playing with random people is alot of fun but not fun enough to make you forget entirely about graphics.

if you're not attending to play online you should give a try to Torchlight demo - click on the LINK

or via Steam, besides that as you've mentioned there's Dragon Age IMO the game of last year aside with Batman AA

if you want to play online then get Diablo 2 with LoD expansion to play with friends

I would pick Titan Quest and expansion. It has the same core gameplay, better graphics, and much more choice in character customisation through combining up to 2 skill sets from the 9 available, rather than having preset character skill trees from the beginning. I found TQ had the longer campaign than Diablo 2, and greater variety of enemies. Both are very good so you can't really go wrong with either. Torchlight is also good, though really strips down the experience to fast and fun. Another alternative from last year is Sacred 2. This has similar gameplay but instead of linear progression from one region to the next, has a large open world map. Venture into an area too early and you will find much higher levelled enemies, but as payback, if you can survive in those regions your level will rocket up. Sadly both Iron Lore and Ascaron have gone bust shortly after completing TQ and Sacred 2, while Blizzard has buckets of money and still hasn't released a sequel to Diablo 2 :(

I played Diablo II and after about 1 hour didn't like it that much and took it back to the store. I played Titan Quest and Torchlight those are alot like diablo and more modern graphics check them out, both don't need massive requirements.

I asked that same question before I got it and boy was I glad I just got it and played it. It was great man. It was what I did the whole summer one summer and after that I was sooo thirsty for more even after the expansion. One of the few games I played because its just fun and relaxing along with intense and awesome. After you're done with that game go for Torchlight. Its a pretty good game to keep you til Diablo 3.

If you can get past the aging graphics (art style is still great after all these years, but technically old), then a definite YES. Make sure to pick up the Battlechest too, since Lord of Destruction expansion pack adds lots of good and useful things to the vanilla game.

nostalgia has a heavy hand in perceptions of games, that and there were not as many games out then so they stood out more due to limited contrast.

example diablo and diablo 2 were great, cause they were some of the first games like them,, now there have been countless games to use the same formula. (which in turn effects diablo) "you change/influence that in which you study"

I'm pretty sure I can count games that use Diablo's formula on one hand, and that's Torchlight for obvious reasons.

No game has ever used Diablo 2's formula. Not one. A few devs have tried, but failed miserably because they missed they didn't get why Diablo 2 was so successful.

lol sorry i meant used the same design to a degree, i mean seriously people actually think there is a genre called diablo-clone. of course not 1 game has taken the same exact formula for diablo 2, if it did, THAT WOULD MAKE IT DIABLO 2. lol come on. lol they (many games) take some of the same formula's (not all the same) and now since time has passed and so many have done it, it takes some of the "eliteness" of diablo 2 away.

that being said diablo2 borrowed alot of the same formula from diablo 1.. period

im not bashing diablo 2 in anyway, i loved it and still do, its just people do not understand what time, and nostalgia do to art, including videogames.

Rose-colored glasses. The game isn't as fun as say, Titan Quest or Torchlight now. I really didn't enjoy it that much, and I too played it past its prime.

Buy the game and it's expansion. Only play online, forget single player. If you don't have any friends willing to jump back on and help you out, then you won't be experiencing the real game.

It's a highly community based game. It would be like only playing Halo: Combat Evolved by yourself and saying its not as fun as everyone thinks... Multiplayer with your best friends is what makes it fun.

Diablo 2 is still a good game, but is definitely showing its age. I'd recommend getting Sacred 2 instead, personally my favourite Diablo-esque game to come out in recent years.

I know what it does to pc gamers, it makes them feel like pc gaming is dying despite it being just as healthy as it has been for years.

diablo ii is much more fun, you can say what you want but the fun factor in diablo ii is just off the charts. Speaking of which, remember when fun factor was a category in video game reviews?

The online service makes Diablo very worthwhile, so for that I highly recommend it. I role-play on StarCraft on the occasion - it takes nothing to run apart from a little tweaking on the newer OSs.

diablo2 is nothing like oblivion or DA: O. its not story driven and theres not a whole lot of story to it (well unless you read the manual...good manual too :P). nor is it character driven. there isnt big moral issues like the witcher or any of that. you pick a character.....kill monsters....level up....improve your stats and skills....kill more monsters and so on. is it worth a play? yes.....but only in multiplayer. see if you can get a game going with your mates...its awsome fun in MP. theres still plenty playing on battle.net also but its plagued by company reps trying to sell you D2 items. its a little annoying when they pop in, spam the chat and then pop out. not a deal breaker but annoying. it wasnt as good in SP imho....fun but it kinda dragged on.

 Diablo II crushes those games. Neither of those even have decent multiplayer.
