So says Amazon and Gamestop.

http://www.amazon.com/Diablo-III-Pc/dp/B00178630A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1266522575&sr=8-1

http://www.gamestop.com/browse/search.aspx?N=0&Ntk=TitleKeyword&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntt=diablo%20iii

Granted, it is early, but in such a case you'd think they simply wouldn't post a price. On the other hand, Activision already sold a ton of copies of Modern Warfare 2 on PC despite people moaning about the $60 price and the lack of server support. We validated their pricing policy.

Given the directions Activision and Blizzard have been going I suppose it's foolish to think the game WON'T be $60. Same with Starcraft II. Or the pieces of Starcraft II.

60$ isn't bad for a phenomenal game, it's only bad when the game is totally rubbish.

I'm fairly certain that's standard for pre-orders that far into the future. I don't think it means it will cost $60 though. It's so that the consumer agrees to pay that much just incase the game costs that much.

Why do you make such a big deal about a $10 price hike when other countries besides the USA, like Australia, have to pay almost double that REGULARLY. And its been like that for years.

I don't agree with them raising the usual pc game price of 50 bucks to 60. But I will get this game regardless of cost because it will be absolutely mind blowing :O.

Is this really a big deal? Do people not realize how much games cost outside of America? Besides, a lot of people are used to paying $60 now. It's no big deal.

I'd have had no problem paying 60 bucks for MW2 provided it had been worth it. Because of what IW offered, well then no. Diablo 3 however will be worth it. Would I rather pay less? Well of course, but unless Blizzard epically fails (and I can't even conceive of a possible scenario with that happening) that game will easily be worth every penny.

Because it'll be higher again in other countries as a result. I don't live in the US, I'm in Canada where we already get a price hike due to currency. A $60 PC game ends up being $70 (or $80 if the dollar plummets between now and the game's release) rather than the traditional cost of $50 or $60.

And I realize that there's an argument in there for game quality, but I don't think it's relevant. Ignoring budget titles, all console games cost the same. All PC games cost the same. A price hike of $10 is 'just $10,' yes, but it's also setting a precident.

Then again, Modern Warfare 2 has already set it.

It's got nothing to do with preorder status, either. Metro 2033 is $50. Supreme Commander 2 is $50.

http://www.amazon.com/Metro-2033-Pc/dp/B002V14VOC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1266876113&sr=8-3

Interestingly, Starcraft 2 is also $60 (albeit on sale at the moment). Not surprising, though.

http://www.amazon.com/Starcraft-II-Wings-Liberty-Pc/dp/B000ZKA0J6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1266876159&sr=1-1

This and they have no price, better yet, they can't have a price, that's just speculations on their part, and trying to get a few $ out of the obsessed fans that lurk the internet for pre-orders.

Metro has a release date, is being released next month, it has an official price.

SC 2 has no release date, has no official price and I'm not even going to say about D3, I said it before anyone that actually thinks they can pre-order for the exact price and not get ripped off a game that will not be released for at least an year is an idiot.

$60 isn't too bad. I remember MS Flight Simulator X Deluxe costing $70 and that's with a discount and was some time after release. I can't even remember the price at day 1.

I'll pay it...it's one of my most anticipated future games and considering the value provided by it's predecessor, it's a no brainier for me. I have been pretty surprised game prices have been stagnant so long anyways...$50 has been "the price" for as long as I can remember...yet the cost of developing a game has risen dramatically.

Also, the price of making games has gone up as well as development team size. Some games in the past cost much more than $50, sometimes getting to be around $100, console were sometimes more as well for people that complain about $400 now. PC and Wii gamers were lucky the price stayed at $50 for as long as it did and have no reason to complain now.

because, like you, we have been paying a standard price for games for over a decade and have become use to it.

While I feel sorry for you for paying more than other countries pay, you cant expect me to sit back and go "Welllll, at least we still have it better than Australia"

Whats next? "Welll, at least we got it better than North Korea"...its called a slippery slope, and while initial objections to price hikes might seem like we are just being stubborn, if you budge early youre dooming yourself to further negative changes

What? If the price comes out to be $50 they'll only charge you $50. They're not trying to scam anyone.

Can you buy blizzard games through steam? I remember using blizzards online steam like service. Will diablo 3 be offered though an online downloading format?

Amazon has a policy where you get the lowest price a product is listed as after you preorder it. They're probably doing this to anticipate the market assumption of a general $10 price hike. ie If the game ends up being 60 dollars, they aren't willing to lose ten bucks on each preorder. I think Starcraft 2 is listed as 60 dollars with a a 16% discount ($50)

Gamestop probably is doing the same thing.

You probably will be able to download it through B.Net, but I wouldn't count on steam.

Then it's ok to make up prices if they're not gonna get the money now and send the game later even if the price is lower and still take all those 60$ pre-orders.

@Danieldust

At least for Amazon, you pay the lowest price they charge after you preorder it. So if they preorder it for $60, the price is changed to $50, then they take a %2-3 discount before they ship, you only pay $48. Don't know about Gamespot though.

mrbojangles25
I think we've already doomed ourselves. There is no licensing fee that publishers have to pay on the PC, that extra $10 is pure profit for them. It didn't impact sales of Modern Warfare 2, there's no reason it'll affect D3 or SC2 because people are whores for Blizzard games. I think even Ubisoft is pulling the $60 stunt for Assassin's Creed 2 and the upcoming Splinter Cell. And a price hike here just means another price hike in other regions.

Sorry, I can't really understand what you're trying to say. They have the pre-order up for $60, but I'm fairly certain they won't charge you until they ship the product. By then, they'll know the retail price and charge you that price. I know Gamestop doesn't charge you until the game is shipped. They just don't want the consumer to agree to pay $50 then have the game come out to be $60 because they aren't authorized to charge that much if the consumer didn't agree to that price. If the game turns out to be $100 then everyone will have to re-order the product because they simply can't charge you that much when you only agreed to pay $60.

So says Amazon and Gamestop.

In 4yrs when Diablo III finally comes out (hopefully a joke lol) maybe the value of the dollar will have dropped even more to justify it. That said i never bought or played CoD MW2 because of the price and the removal of the servers. Atleast DIII is going to take atleast 40hrs to play through.

This. I don't want to pay $10 extra. I would rather have $10 extra in the back of my pocket. If you wouldn't want to keep extra money for yourself, well you're weird. I will not pay $60 for a game. Plus I'm sure GoGamer.com will have the game discounted for PC users anyway.

We'll be playing D3 for literally a decade, just as D2 is still being played. Paying an extra 10 bucks is not an issue. For Single Player games with little replay, yes, that would be more of a concern, but D3 is a living online game.

Blizzard operates completely separate from Actiivsion Corporate. We don't have to worry about Bobby Kotick(spelling) coming to live under their beds and spook them.

I am also not going to shell out $60, even for Diablo III. I could get so much more for $50, why would I pay $60? It doesn't make any sense. I'd just wait for the Battlechest version that I know they will have. Granted also, this is just GameStop and Amazon speculating. It could go either ways.

Inflation will have to kick in at some point, PC games can't stay at $50 forever.

I do like that the other PC games have not risen in price yet, I was afraid this was going to happen with MW2 making the first step. Has anyone else noticed that MW2 on 360 is now cheaper than the PC version, ironic no?

For now standard price for PC games should be $50. For game like Assassin's Creed 2, paying $60 is ridiculous. But for Diablo III, it's too early to tell.

For this game I'll gladly pay $60 because Blizzard has never let me down. I've spent more on the Collectors Editions of WOW and every WOW expansion anyways.

This

The difference is you pay double because of the inflation and difference in currency values not because the overall price of the game is increasing. A 10$ in America will trickle down to an increase in other countries.

It's not the economic times that cause these price hikes, it is the people that show these companies that they are willing to dish out extra cash for a game....and all the extra cash for the "Limited Edition" version of games. These companies keep tabs on what sells, for how much and how fast. They've adjusted prices based on what the consumer is willing to spend. These companies will put spins on the reason why prices have gone up for PC gaming now: pirating, production costs, blah, blah, blah....to make the consumer feel like these price hikes are inevitable and necessary. No matter to me. I'm a cheap gamer and I don't need games as soon as they hit the shelf. Only times I buy a game at full, new retail price is about once (maybe twice) a year or if I have a gift card and I'm not spending my own cash. I'd really like to get a copy of the first Modern Warfare, but I refuse to pay $30 for it still. I'm patient, I can wait for it to run down to $20. If it doesn't, then I probably never get a copy. Now that these companies see people are willing to start spending $60 on some of these newly released games, they'll all start to follow suite here soon for any game that shows interest in the gaming community. I've purchased my one game at full retail price of $40 a few weeks back - STALKER: Call of Pripyat. I don't see any games in the future that I'm interested in paying new retail price for. Dragon Age, I had a $25 gift card and only had to spend an extra $20 of my own money to get it..... For those that have the money and want to spend $50-60 on a new game, all the more power to you. I'll stick with my cheap gaming.

Why do you make such a big deal about a $10 price hike when other countries besides the USA, like Australia, have to pay almost double that REGULARLY. And its been like that for years.

I like how COD5 still costs $100 down here :P MW2 was $120 when it first came out. Some other "$50" cost over a 100 here

It's acceptable because it's Blizzard. If it were another company, everyone would be calling for boycotts and bad-mouthing the developer.
