Well, I live in the country and the only net access is dial up at this time. I purchased the Orange Box yesterday. I am attempting to download the games at this time. I decided not to intall TF2 because of my dial up and I figured I will not be doing an online gamming. I am trying to download the half life series (3 games) and portal. I quickly realized that I need to intall these one at a time. When the screen intially promted me I chose all of the games that I wanted to install, I selected allo of the ones I wanted. My cpu is tyrying to download 3 of these at once (I guess one of the games is on the second disk and I have not gotten there yet).

Is there any way that I can stop steam from downloading all three at once and just go one at a time? It will take me a few weeks to get all three at my current pace. I guess steam might me cool for others, but for me it blows so far. Just put thre freaking games on a disk people, not everyone has access to connections other than dial up. Thanks for any advice.

Do you not see the menu when you right click the games in the list? Just pause the ones you want to hold for later.

Right click on the games you don't want to download > click pause or stop. It's not complicated. Did you even look or did you run straight to the forums to complain?

I would not have even installed steam if I was still on dialup. Just my 2 cents. Good luck playing tf2 online when every other server is running custom maps. Thats a nice 10mb download before you even start your lag filled game session. lol

Why do you say you are downloading the games? Did you buy the Orange Box off steam or Retail? If you bought it retail then you should just be able to install the games and then add small updates...

Dont be so sensative, I am just seeking some help. Gees, do you have stock in steam? If you think about my situation, I believe that you would agree with me that steam is not ideal for those folks that are still on dial up. I did try to stop the downloads first before comming to ask for help.

I guess you will bash me again becaise I bought the game off of e-bay. It came with 2 disk in the box. I will try to pause the games. Thanks for those who actually provided some help. What a great forum

Okay so you have a disk...have you installed the games first off the disks? Tell me once you've done that because I have a feeling that you downloading the whole game off steam rather then just the updates. Also, when installing off the disk make sure that you are prompted to use the second disk at some stage during the installation of EP2. There has been a problem with that.

When I instered the first disk, I loaded steam onto my system. I entered my activation code and was then given a list of games to choose from, I picked everything except TF2 beacsue I do not do online gamming due to dial up. It began installing all four of the games I selected. I have not been asked to insert the second disk yet. I'll let you know what happens, appears to working ok, just will take forever.

Buying Discs = FAIL,the discs and thus the games, are far more prone to damage and unlike with say,Steam, you don't have to deal with returning the disc or getting a new one,i know from experince, thats why i'm planning on getting Steam in the future when there's more games i want that i can get through there.

I had my Rome: Total War and Empire Earth 2 CD's in cases, they got bubbles in them when i didn't even use them,i don't deny that i'm not the best with CD's,but i didn't even USE them in a LONG time and when i decided to play again,i couldn't play them since there was a bubble in the first disc of both games.

I'd rather wait a few weeks and get a game that'll actually LAST than get a game in-store and have it get damaged even when its in the case MUCH sooner.

It all depends on how well your treat your disks.

I've go Game CD's from 1998 that still work perfectly fine.

You forget, Orange box no matter what he does is forced to have a steam account.. So regardless of the discs being damaged or not he could download it.. But said before he has a 56k connection meaning 10kbs top download rate..

I do appreciate everyones help. I am all set now. I guess steam was trying to download the entire game. As someone mentioned ealier in th thread, I was able to stop the download and reinstall the games from the disk. I am not sure what went wrong, but it's all good now. Thanks again, I am sure it was user error on my behalf.
