They were both in development at the same time. Neither knew what the other was doing. So they have similar art styles but neither copied the other. It just happenes they were both going for the same look

TF2 wasnt the first game with that kind of art style in the first place....

and honestly anyone who thinks that DICE directly took the art style from TF2 should consider the fact that DICE's first game already had a cartoon like art-style, and that was the predecesor for the BF line of games.

That too.

I'll just repeat....Valve didn't invent cell shading or cartoony graphics. DICE had done one of these games before. And Both games were in development at the same time....

..so take off your tin foil hats...no conspiracy here

That's very plausible, but do you have timelines to back it up? TF2's final visual style was revealed in 2006. Has DICE really been working on a free game for over two years? And has it had the visual style nailed down all that time? I don't buy that at all. But I do accept the possibility.

But I mean, let's not forget that the entertainment industry as a whole is as faddish as the school playground. Anything popular gets a whole slew of imitations. Just look at how many fantasy movies we had after the success of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. And, man, let's not even start with superheroes.

I personally think the more important question is not, did it copy it - but, is it a good copy? Everything is plagurism anyway, so who cares? How good things are is what matters.

no, Valve copied the cell shaded style of Zelda wind waker. TF2 = Zelda wind waker-like cell shading + CS gameplay.

because we all know only one game can be cell shaded right?

Whats wrong with copying, as long as they do it properly:) For example the premise of Half-Life is basically an elaborate version of DooM and Quake( Weird experiment goes wrong, evil things come out and cause trouble and then you the silent protagonist hast to stop them), but that didn't stop the game from being awesome, right? Now back to the current subject, I thing the idea behind tf2 was great and I would love to see it in BF form so I can't wait,(oh and it's FREE!:D)

Well Zelad wind waker didn't invent cell shading...

From the screenshots that just looks like a simple cartoon.

The game that really used cell shading to an interesting effect was XIII - if its one game thats been copied its that!

It's obvious tf2 was an inspiriation but the styles are totally different. Heroes goes for the comic book war hero style with some ww2 propaganda poster comics style as well. TF2 style is more like the recent animation movies from the last six or seven years.

It does seem that way and even more so since TF2 has been out for a little while now and Battlefield: Heroes is still having previews done about it. I don't understand what the titles have anything to do with it.

http://www.battlefield-heroes.com/dev-blog/nailing-the-look

I also spoke to Lars Gustavsson, the DICE studio Creative Director, and he mentioned to me an idea he had while working on Battlefield 1942 – he imagined a 'toon' Battlefield game, where a direct hit with a tank shell would just leave a pair of smoking boots on the ground. DICE's games have a long history of stylized graphics, with Codename Eagle's cartoon characters, the bright fun colors of Midtown Madness 3, and Battlefield 1942's ****which was influenced by the very same WWII comics I'd read as a boy. Given these directions, I set Gustav to work.

Gustav started creating character visualizations for feedback. The first set of images were something like a WWII version of the British cartoon pop band Gorillaz – extremely cool looking but I felt a little too left-field and childish looking. Eventually we settled on something which had a direct link back to 'Red' the hero in the 'pre-Battlefield' game, Codename Eagle.

DICE

As Gustav and his team worked on this art ****in the early phases of the project, we knew that there was a chance we could be compared to the small but well known group of PC shooters that have separated themselves from the standard realistic ****with a cartoon look – most notably Monolith's No One Lives Forever, Ubisoft's XIII and Valve's Team Fortress 2. We decide we would ignore the possibility of these comparisons and go with the ****we believed in as a team — a ****that fulfilled all the objectives I have detailed above.

After all, the alternative would have meant that Battlefield Heroes was yet another realistic WW2-****shooter. How original would that have been?

DICE

Is this a joke thread? The influence on the BF:Heroes art style comes from WWII propaganda imagery itself. TF2 has been in development for a while, but not that long.

Not to mention Battlefield is more of a cartoon shooter at heart due to it's eccentric gameplay. For a long time TF2 was supposed to be a brutal tactical fps.

DICE has copied everything else since the start. Hell TFC pretty much started class-based fps games anyway, and TF2 really took the spotlight for the "cartoony" look. Valve just had the guts to do it first. After BF2142, I can see why DICE has resorted to giving away their games for free.

Your wrong. Lots of games did it before valve. DICE did it before valve too. See my previous post.

This aint TF2...

Also, Team fortress didn't start with TFC on Half-life.

It started as an indie mod for Quake

It really doesn't matter because the only way TF2 and BFH are similar is from the art design. They're different in everything else.

Don't think that DICE is making this game just for the fun of it. It is free to play, however its business model will be in support of microtransactions for in-game items and abilities and such.

Who the hell cares? Seriously you can go on and argue a game copying off another game for multiple things. Its not like you can make everything original. As long as the game is fun that is all that matters. Its a free game, if you don't like it don't play it.

Yes they did.

And also, TF2 copied off Wolfenstein 3D for being a FPS and Wolfenstein copied off Pong for being a game...

I dunno, BFH looks more cartoony than TF2. TF2 looks like it was pulled straight from "The Incredibles" by Pixar.

So yeah, maybe the art style is similar, but TF2 looks like a Pixar movie, BFH looks more cartoonish to me.
