I've been playing Dungeon Siege all day yesterday. At first, I thought the game was pretty damn cool. But I don't even see the point of playing a few hours later. I went the route of a warrior, and the entire game goes like this.

1) Click an enemy.

2) Wait.

3) ????

4) Profit

I only have one thing to level up (Strength), and it levels up pretty slowly. About 1 level per hour of gameplay. The key thing that makes a dungeon-crawler Diablo clone fun is progression. Dungeon Siege has little progression. If I actually bought this when it was released, I would have wasted my money.

What did other people think of the game?

I like it. Great dungeons, quirky party members, nifty loot, skill based leveling - whats not to like? As for the combat system - the same could be said about a ton of games out there, DS does it well imo though.

Loved the game (both of them actually). And many things level up...been a while but you should have other stats that level up based on what you are doing. The items are pretty cool too.

Some quick replies. :P

Carlosjeuro, in virtually every other dungeon crawler I've played, each class has skills that you can use and level up so you aren't just left clicking each monster systemically. But in Dungeon Siege, you're doing just that.

Dnuggs40, there's 7 things that level up. Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Melee Skill, Ranged Skill, Combat Magic, and Nature Magic. Melee Skill and Ranged Skill don't do anything, so you're left with 5 things. Now being a warrior, my main attribute is strength. I don't need or use dexterity, intelligence, or magic. So the only stat that matters to me is strength.

It's been a while since I played, but if I remember correctly - Melee and Ranged skills are required to use better/higher-end weapons (maybe armor, but that might be based on strength....).

I think also the higher skill you have in melee or ranged allow for stronger attacks and might have something to do with your % on getting critical strikes.

It's been a while since I played, but I think that's how things went.

As for the games, I rather enjoyed the first one. The second one had the worst voice acting ever and it hurt my head having to listen to people talk....I never did beat the second one.

As a fighter you gain dexterity too, which increases (if my memory serves correctly) your armor class. So realistically you have 3 PRIMARY stats to increase as a fighter. What's great about DS is you are not LIMITED by that, though...there is no reason you can't raise other stats to make "multi-purpose" characters.

A multi purpose character fails. They'd lack the high strength, dexterity or intelligence to be able use new spells and weapons/armors and such - also a low melee, ranged or magic skill hinders you in fighting. This was the thing that I really hated about DS 1 & 2, how you're limited to strictly melee, ranged or magic (nature/battle). There was no room for multi-tasking skills.

Interesting. I have yet to see any weapons/armor that use melee/ranged skill. I've only seen Strength and Dex requirements, but I'm only about 4 hours into the game. Nor have I seen critical hits or any mechanic that even acknowledges that critical hits are in the game.

I have countless hours in DS both in the single player campaign and online...multi-purpose characters do not fail at all. Melee and nature is a good mix...so is some others. Obviously your secondary skill will but MUCH lower than your primary, but you will get some nice bonuses from the other skillset.

Dnuggs40, my dexterity does raise, but about 1 point every 3 hours of gameplay. I *COULD* use a bow and arrow. But honestly, what's the point? I'd be using low-tier weapons against mid-tier enemies. Same thing for spells. I could cast spells. But there's no reason to. The game so far hasn't given me a means to, or a way to if I even wanted to unless I wanted to grind against beginner-zone enemies.

While I agree that focused characters perform much better, I always try to make Hybrids in these types of games. The action is so repetitive, its nice to have multiple options at your fingertips, and be able to adapt to different types of mobs. Keeps me playing a lot longer.

Been a long time...but that doesn't sound right at all...exaggeration?

Anyways...I am not sure what you are looking for...if you don't like the game there's nothing anybody can do about that. It's a diablo-ish game that has a leveling mechanics that works by your character repeating actions over and over and over again...if this doesn't appeal to you I really don't know what to say lol.

I played it right to the point where you enter this graveyard and all the zombies start killing your donkey. I then quit the game. Then I restarted it about a year later, reached the same spot - and quit it again.

i must admit that i played it for too long before i stop, its a long game but thats because its an ultra linear hack and slash to get level and money, when you reach the town you stop buy stuff and move on...... but what piss me off was the long paths filled with enemies....attack, attack, and .....yup, attack thats all you do.

Not at all. I played about 5 hours, and my dexterity is only at 11.5 (with a warrior character).

My problem with the game is that it's by far the shallowest Diablo clone I've ever played. It's got no skill trees, no abilities, nothing of the sort.

5 hours you should be well on your way in the game...and it should be higher than that.

I am going to reinstall it later tonight to see how far I can get in an hour or two...was meaning to replay it anyways been a while.

It's not Diablo, please people....stop comparing anything that resembles a hack-n-slash type game play to Diablo. If DS wanted to be a Diablo type game, they would have a random dungeon generator in the game and lots of random item drops of rare items to combine for making a set....DS doesn't do that and the fact that there is no skill tree also goes to show they're not trying to make a Diablo type game. If you want a half-way decent Diablo clone, then you should play Titan Quest (and expansion; Immortal Throne). That's about the best Diablo clone out there, in my opinion. DS 1 & 2 are not Diablo, nor are they trying to be.

You should really play Dungeon Siege II along with the expansion Broken World. It introduces so much more that was missing from the original Dungeon Siege such as skill trees for each class and special powers as well. There is also dual weilding for melee characters. There is also a decent story line that kept me interested at least. More character development, story, interesting companions, pets, skill trees, special powers, etc. The only problem is that its linear like the original. The multiplayer in DSII wasn't as great as DSI because DSI had a wonderful open ended map to explore. DSII just as the same singleplayer campaign but in multiplayer form.

The expansion introduces two new classes that use two different skills. One uses nature/melee while the other uses magic/range. Experience goes to both skills as you level up.

Once you play DSII you wont be able to go back to DSI its just that much better imo

Dungeon Siege lacks imagination. The storyline is skeletal, the character development is limited, and the combat is repetitive & dull. The game had some impressive graphics for its time, and I give it due credit for its ability to immerse players in its alternate reality. Other than that, one cannot say much for the game. It pales in comparison to the greats.
