Ok This is going to be direct x 10 graphics?

And this for dx 9?

Now come on ive seen some games in dx 9 that render lighting effects and other effects like the grass and background landscapes and shadows just as good. For the difference between the two pics they make the dx 9 look bad almost like early dx 9 games ot late dx 8 games. I think that these pics have been doctored up cause these pics were made before dx 10 was out and they just want you to get dx 10 cards and vista as a ploy. I can understand shader and water effects with dx 10 but come on

Aren't they pics for the new Conan game or something?  Either way, yes there may be better looking DX9 games, but you've just posted one example.  I can remember the GS article that showed much more than that.  It's no ploy, you can wait and see the difference for yourself.

I know!, I hope other games won't purposely gimp the Dx9 versions to look worse than Dx10, I heard Dx10 was less of the effects, and more on performance

Exactly.

It is about increasing the performance, by creating very similar feature/powered hardware and therefore increasing the effects/graphics so they don't take such a huge hit on performance, such as soft shadows.

Personally, I think the DX9 one looks better. The DX10 one is too dark. Cool, you can have DX10 for all it's gonna cost ya, glad I'm sticking with DX9 then. :P

These pics are from the new MMO Age of Conan, it looks awesome and as fro dx9 it is still going to be very nice and very playable. BUT if you want to step your gaming experience up to more realism ovbiously that is what dx10 is trying achieving. personally i dont mind playing with dx9 cause the game still gives that awesome gameplay.

Seems, for the time being, until hardware advances some more. If you want DX10 n more bling bling, perfomance will take a hit, im just gonna wait till Vista is actually worth using, or whatever OS they plan to release after that.

I dunno Crysis DX9 version kills AOC, i just think they've left out features for DX9 so people buy Dx10

There's no doubt that DX10 will have the capabilities to make a game look a lot better than DX9, but they are trying to sell something, that's a simple fact. Of course they are going to try and make it look as impressing as possible. If a game is made FOR DX10 it's probably not going to be optimized for DX9(well, maybe nowadays it will still be), and I'm sure you can manage to make a DX9 game that looks better than a DX10 game. I think the main point of an engine being 'better' is that it can render more efficiently, easier for developers to make better graphics provided the hardware is compatible, and it can actually run with decent framerates.

actully the big thing is DX10 is not Shaders or vertex, its the new geometry engine, alot of the new DX10 effects will be from that, the shader code and vertex code only got a slight overhaul to be honest and look almost identical to there DX9c counterpart though a bit shorter and with higher limits on the code. I personlly think DX10 games with DX9 mode will look similar to running COD2 in DX7 mode, still pretty damn good.

http://developer.download.nvidia.com/SDK/10/direct3d/samples.html

go there and watch the videos on new dx10 features - it's a pretty big leap forward in real-time rendering.  it's not that dx10 sucks like some people say, it's that developers are still in the process of LEARNING how to implement these features successfully into their next games.

Those lighting effects were in Far Cry with hdr and the latest Tombraider. Maybe you wont get the same performance under DX9 but surely the top DX9 cards and the 8800's could handle it on XP.

As far as capabilities are concerned, DirectX 10 will be a lot better than DirectX 9 for sure. Now, how developers are going to use this potential is a different matter.

Gaming on Vista requires all the performance you can get. Vista is so crappy for each and every game I've tried, not to mention the awful sound you get from non OpenAL games... ugh

Lightbeams in DX10 but not in DX9. Hmmm, well I for one have seen light beams in DX9, they looked like **** but they were there non the less. But anyway. DX10 wins hands down but DX10 in Vista is a no no for me. I no I'm gonna get someone say "well I've got Vista and its great your all just poor". But I've had to deal with Vista at work and I don't like it, its a resource hog and after spending massive amounts of money on my PC I don't wanna lose half my performance just so I can see slightly nicer light beams and choppy water during storms. I'll get it without a second thought if it wasn't just a resource hog but at the moment I'm staying clear. So value for money DX9 wins, but visuals alone is DX10 ontop.

I believe that it depends on the game first, not DX10, that determines how good it looks. Age of Conan is an MMO, so it's not surprising that it's not the best looking game there.

dx10 is a waste of money until another year or so. till then dx9 is worth the less buck

dx 10 i thought was about better graphix with less power, but its prob looking about the same but when the optimzation really starts you will see much better graphix.

Doesnt it also include physics rendering??Â
