ok so im trying to get into pc gaming after i gotta badass new alienware m15x with all the bells and whistles. it came out to about $4300 so it can basically run anything thats out there.

my question is, should i go buy the games from the stores or should i just download them from direct2drive and steam?

i have a 320gb 7200rpm hard drive and chose not to use the smart bay for another hard drive.

if i download my games will i have enough space to store everything including music and movies? im not sure how many games i plan on getting but im a pretty avid gamer so lets just asume its a lot.

also do you guys know if theres any problems with these downloading services?

im not too keen on switching out discs all the time so it would be nice to just have the game on your hard drive so you dont need the cds.

$4300 for a computer eh? I feel really, really, really bad for you mate. Return it if it's not too late and find another deal. There's no reason why a person should spend as much on ANY computer/laptop as they would on a not-too-shabby used car.

Anyway, none of my business... As for your question D2D/Steam are convenient solutions, and (with Steam, at least), you can delete and re-download games whenever you'd like, so HDD space shouldn't be an issue. If you run out of space, just delete the game of your choice. If you want to play it again, just download it again. If you ask me though, nothing beats a physical game box with a nice manual to scan through while the game's installing :P Up to your personal choice.

4,300 dollars for a PC and you only have a 320 gb hard drive? Alienware was always known for ripping people off and I see they have gotten even worse.

320 gb's shouldn't be a problem, unless you get up to like 100 gb in music and over 100 in games like I do. You can buy terabyte hard drives for like 110 bucks now though, so if you need to, you can always install another one easily.

As for the discs, they are almost completely useless unless you don't have an internet connection or you have a slow one. You don't need the discs to play the games even if you use a disc to install, so it's basically the same thing as downloading it.

You don't need a degree in computer hardware managing to build a computer, and if you think you are not capable of such minor feat I bet any local computer store could get you the parts and assemble the computer for you at a much lesser price. Also, there is no diffference in terms of disk space between the digital or retail copy, that I know of atleast.

Yes, you got ripped off as badly as they say. And retail games don't differ in file size from their digital counterparts because games don't use their CDs/DVDs for anything other than a check to see if you actually own the game.

Ok, I know why it was so expensive now. It's a laptop. You could have saved 3000 bucks if you got a desktop. lmao

Alienware builds great computers. They are expensive but so is a ferrari. Now yes you could build a 200 mph car yourself for a lot less but it would take time, effort, education, and some knowledge of tools. $4000 is a lot of money but it was worth it to him and there are computers that sell for a lot more. CPU and Maximum PC regularly review desktops in the 5-10K range. When I built my first computer I got a power supply that was DOA. I didn't know which part was the problem when my pc wouldn't post and I didn't have the equipment to find out. Plus I had warranties through half a dozen different manufacturers. Buying a pc isn't stupid, it's just another choice.
