Demo

I'm currently running it in dx9 with my old Ati Radeon HD 3850 512mb until my Ati 5850 1gb arrives tomorrow. All maxed Ultra settings @1920x1080, 4xMSAA. Average fps is 28.1fps.

Will come back on tomorrow to show my new results with my (incoming) Sapphire Ati Radeon HD 5850 GDDR5 1024mb gpu card. In dx11. + screenshots

I have had it for a couple of days now. With my 5870 I got an avg 67 fps and a min of 60 fps with max (ultra) settings and 4x MSAA @1920 x 1080 resolution. Make sure that you use ATI's hotfix drivers for Dirt 2. My first run was done with Catalyst 9.11 drivers that came out mid November and I had an avg of 45 fps. The hotfix drivers are supposed to add crossfire support for Dirt 2, but they also give a big boost in performance with a single card (avg 45 fps to 67 fps for my setup). Here is a link for the drivers: ATI Hotfix Driver for Dirt 2.

Are you monitoring fps with fraps, or something else?

farrell2k
It has a benchmark built into it. I have also monitered fps with fraps and get about the same results in game as I do in the benchmark.

thanks jtcraft, I will install the 9.11 drivers along with that hotfix when my new card arrives. It would be interesting to see if me being on a core 2 duo cpu makes much difference to fps.

got any dx11 screenies?

Runs pretty good on my computer (E2200, 8800gs, 2GB RAM). I got 40 FPS average on the benchmark. All settings on high.

I'm wondering the same thing. Is there something that I'm missing in the options?

You just need the hotfix drivers. You do not need the 9.11 drivers. Here is a Dirt 2 DX 9 & DX 11 Comparison link that shows some comparison shots in both modes.

Alright, got it. The game looks great in DX11, btw. Ran the benchmark on an HD 5770 w/ 8x MSAA and all settings at their highest. I got 36 fps average w/ a minimum of 31.3, which is pretty manageable for me and a racing game. There don't seem to be any substantial framerate dips or stutters during a race. So far, I'm really glad that they decided to hold off this game's release for DX11. Everything looks beautiful.

Apart from a few extra shadows and textures, the only noticeable difference that I could see is the flag.

I was hoping for something more dramatic like this.

I don't even think the game supports dx10/dx10.1, just 9 and 11...

The Demo is using the Dx11 engine. If you are using Windows 7 / Vista (dx11), and a dx11 capable card, then it defaults to dx11.

If however you are running the demo with xp/7/vista, but do not have a dx11 capable card, you are running it in dx9.

Well my Ati HD 5850 1gb just arrived, installed it.

First like to say omfg playing Crysis:Warhead on all Enthusiast settings, 2xAA, getting above 30fps+ (minimum is around 25fps) completely playable and smooth to my eyes finally a Crysis conqueror! note: On all Gamer settings 4xAA, I get a 38-45fps. Also like to mention I did try enthusiast once on my old 3850 and it didn't look as good as the 5850 makes it look, so it seems there really is some badass tech in this badboy!

will come back with dx11 dirt 2 bench and screens if i can. 1920x1080 8xMSAA, Ultra (without hotfix): (drag the image to a new browser tab to see better)

For all the hype, tessellation doesn't look that good in this game (at least from the comparison screenshot of the people). The water/lighting affects look brilliant though.

The tessellation mainly affects textures so things like roads, buildings etc.. are mostly what thats about, more fidelity in this particular game.

I just ran that maxxed dx11 benchmark and I was impressed.

tried the hotfix, it actually made the logo's in the startup of the game and the in game tv screens artifact (all driver related) the rest of the actual game was completely normal though, how odd.

so what I did was clean my drivers, and re-install the 9.11 package. works fine now. think my system doesn't like the hotfix or something.

That happened to me after I installed the hotfix as well. Actually, just restarting the computer seemed to fix the problem.

Installing it also reset the clock speeds, so after raising them again I was able to gain about 4 more fps to the average. Not much, but it seemed to run much smoother in some areas comparatively.

Grats on your awesome new card, btw.

Thanks. I'm all buzzed about it, considering I went from a 3850 512mb to 5850 1gb. The difference in every game is amazing. The performance is fantastic in everything I through at it, can max anything.

Tessellation is also supposed to affect models of people (adding more polygons) to make them look more realistic. I saw almost no change in the comparison shots. They still looked like models from the 90s.

We're talking about details here, and high speed gaming is not about details. So far, DX11 is a fail.

Well, we've seen what capabilities DX11 has with the Unigine benchmark. It's up to the devs to actually utilize them to their full potential. The marginal-looking changes in Dirt 2 don't seem to very well justify the long delay they made to implement DX11 into the game. Also, naturally you won't notice these cosmetic enhancements very well in a racing game. It's still relatively new technology and game devs are just beginning to work with it, so it still shows plenty of promise.

just installed the hotfix again, worked this time, 56fps ultra 8xMSAA dx11 @ 1920x1080.

and you are right, game devs will be working on this new api, so you will see the real differences between dx9/10 and dx11, as said just look at the unigine engine heaven, that says alot about the new api, the wireframes show how much better the fidelity of objects are, the motion/fluidness of cloth, the better water affects, the tessellation is outstanding, and I would add it runs older games faster too. There are many videos demonstrating this on youtube in HD, so check em out.

This is the leap in visual quality we have been waiting for. There are even lists of games that are going to be and are getting updated to dx11.

some games already announced to have dx11, it is all too obvious more games are coming. such as Battlefield BC2, Crysis 2, AvP etc..

dx11 explained, give this a read through too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMStlGkSH9Y, check this out seriously.
