hello, so im going to create a partition for when i install windows 7, so i can backup files, so i go onto the vista disk management, but it says of the free 70GB i have free i can create a partition consisting of only 200MB.....why is it saying i can only have such a small partition when i have lots of free space??

Its a bit pointless to backup on the same HDD, what you going to do if the drive fails (which happen all the time)? I suggest a USB memory stick or External HDD depending on how much data you have.

If you still want to make a partition you can use Partition Wizard, its free.

just so you know, even if you do a clean install, windows install won't format your drive unless you tell it to.

Do you have 70GB fre on your current drive (not disk, but C:) or do you have 70 GB unpartitioned space?

If it is the first, you have to shrink your C: drive to create free disk space you can create a partition on. This can be done in Vista Disk manager or 3rd parties programs, as another poster suggested.

hey guys, thanks for the replies, turns out my uni room mate has a external hard drive....but it all turned out to be a waste because rock solid was totally right, im just so used to starting allllll over again with my computer at home, maybe cos of going from vista to xp.....anyways, its sorted now and im on windows 7 :) oh btw gamespot before u think im some sort of pirate i got it free through the university and msnd aa scheme......so DONT ban me...
