I was really looking forward to playing this game. I went in with fairly low expectations graphics wise and AI wise. However...when I got into it there was more than that which turned me off.

AI - I...I was shocked as to how bad the enemy AI is in this game. Even compared to other games around the same time. I could be standing 15 feet away and they would not see me. Maybe because it was supposed to be "night" outside. But, I think anyone would be able to see a person 15 feet away.

Gun-play - I found the animations for firing the weapons in this game are medicore at best. It didn't look right when you fired the weapons. There's a certain something which some games have that make the weapon animations look good. The recoil, the muzzle flash, the sound, all factor into this. Deus Ex seemed to lack all of the listed characteristics...

Dialouge - This was the main thing which turned me off. The dialouge is very dull. I found the story to be somewhat dull as well. I think the dialouge is supposed to be monotone because of the cyber-punk future theme. But they could have done a bit better. I found the lines don't have expression to them.

Overall I was fairly dissapointed with the game. However, I was impressed that the commander knew about me exploring the women's bathroom though. :P

You know it's just going to get incinerated in the first five minutes with the kind of enraged dragons coming his way. Damn, man, waste of a good shield, what were you thinking?

WELL IF YOU CANT ENJOY A GOOD QUALITY GAME THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD JUST GO IN A CORNER AND DIE!!

lol, jk, jk! :P

but anyway. yeah, the game is pretty old so why would you expect everything to be perfect? What I really appreciated about the game was the atmosphere, especially in HongKong. That was my favorite. *goes off daydreaming about the old days*

Well. I wasn't expecting the game to have 50000000 polygons in each character model. I was expecting a good story and I bought it out of impulse one day. I hadn't really read in-depth about the story, but I knew it's premise. Once again, the poor dialouge and painfully dumb AI turned me off. I would have been fine with gunplay if those were intact. Graphics weren't important.

Hey...it's an RPG. Dialouge is supposed to interest me and progress the storyline in an intruiging manner. However Deus Ex did neither for me. The other nagging elements didn't help either.

i'm with you, TC. like you, i installed this game with great expectations -- indeed, nothing short of the quality set by classics around that time, eg. Thiefseries and System Shock series. and like you, i was gravely disappointed.

Aside from the flaws you've mentioned -- which i agree wholeheartedly -- i would also like to point out that the game has a very poor visual presentation. i'm not talking about the graphic; it's the lack of details that made the game much less immersive and atmospheric than it already is. and no, the supposedly gritty urban and industrialsetting doesn't excuse its failure to create a drawing atmosphere. Thief series is much grittier, and it doesn't suffer from this problem at all.

obviously it doesn't become a cult of some sort for no reason at all. but, yea, in my opinion, the game doesn't deserve its status as a true classic either......

All I ever hear about this game is how great it is. I tried it twice a few years ago and just don't understand why it's great. I finish almost every game I start, but this one I gave up on it twice out of boredom.

Its my favorite game, but not everyone can like it. Its only when you dont provide reasons for disliking a well-respected game that you get flamed (by me at least).

But you gave some valid reasons. It just sounds like you were expecting more of an FPS than an RPG, and deus ex is, imo, at least 60% RPG. Yea, the weapon animations and sounds are pretty bad, and the stealth system is pretty off-or-on, but it all works and thats what counts. I really wish they had a "light gem" system for the stealth mechanics.

Whats up with disliking the dialogue and NPC interaction? It is some of the best ive ever seen. I admit the voiceacting is pretty bad at times, but the story and dialogue is simply amazing. Just wait until you talk to the bartender in hong kong and the blue computer thing at the Illuminatti compound...intellectually stimulating to say the least.

It has flaws yeah, in my mind there weren't enough good weapons, all my builds became the same (rifles were just so much better than any other weapon) there are only a few good choices for different augs. The game was a little too dark (using your flashlight in places where it shouldn't have been needed) and I thought it should have been a little less linear.

That being said, I still love the game, great atmosphere, I loved the plot and the cyper-punkness and there aren't nearly enough good FPS/RPGs out there. The biggest dissapointment was that Deus Ex was a great concept that was unpolished, but the sequel didn't make it better and instead just drove the series into the ground. They should have made all skills viable, better ways to mod your gun, less linear and with an equally interesting story and I would have been happy.

Worst...advice...EVER!

First of all, 2001 isnt "VERY old". Second, the sequal was a complete abomination, completely taking a step backwards on everything but the game engine.

Either try Deus Ex a few more times, or dont even bother with it at all. But do not, by any means, come into contact with Deus Ex 2.

But he is right about the AI, And stop with that crap about the game being to old because HL is 2 years older and the AI is far far far better than the one in Deus Ex...... Is there anyway to improve the AI maybe a patch I don't know...

Well believe me it's a lot harder to create an AI for a relatively non-linear and open game like Deus Ex, especially with all the bots, animals, people and guards. I actually think overall the AI handled itself pretty damn nicely to say the least, it's funny but only in combat does the AI do stupid things. Which in Deus ex is a choice and not a must.

Oh and the Shifter Mod does fix some parts, but you still aren't getting STALKER like AI from Deus Ex.

Ya, guess you did. Its a pretty interesting conversation as well. To get there, go talk to Alex Jacobson, then go into the back room. On the right I think there is a door, its locked so you need to unlock it somehow. Inside you will see a blue "computer", and its supposedly the predecessor to Daedelus. This is in that Illumanati guy's house in France.

I felt the same way. In fact, a LOT of people I know feel that way. The trick is to go at this game in two or three stages. Play the game until you get bored, then come back to it. Rinse, repeat. This game isn't OMGTHISISAWESOME, but it's a good enough game to play through until the end. At the very least, it will get you into the discussion when it comes up.

deus ex is very good for its time but really, it is old. If you want better games, there are other. RPG, Ultima IV and Magic candle 1 comes to mind. MC1 is a really great RPG. Great story, lots to do and really big map. The fights are interesting too even though it is turn based. There is strategy to it.

If you want some other games here:

PC old EMPIRE
Master of Orion 1
Heavy Gear 2
Starsiege Tribes v1.

Doesn't needs to be a STALKER like AI, just that if you're infront of them they see you and don't say "I thought I saw something" .. come on you've to admit that part of the game is really weak, but if the patch improves the AI so they can see from close ranges then the game is just amazing, actually AI is the only bad thing I found on it the rest is outstanding specailly considering the time when it came out.

That's a good part of the game...

I find that all these classics that people like here on Gamespot generally aren't as amazing to those who play it now because a lot of the praise is from personal memory and nostalgia. For instance, back in 99 I played Rainbow Six, and part of the reason why I liked that game so much is because I didn't expect anything great. I didn't really know you could play such cool shooting games on a computer, as my prior gaming experience was limited to a Nintendo. It was pretty complex at the time.

Now, the standards have increased, and the game no longer is that great. I like it partly because I have memories with it, not because its a timeless classic.

OMG, the dialogue is the best part of the game. So yeah, if you really disliked the dialogue (which I find odd) in this game, then there's not much else to the game that makes it exceptional.
