I have subscribed to gametap for quite a while now (off and on), and really think the service is getting very good. Wanted to give anybody who is interested and not tried it out yet a little update. Gametap has always had a good catalog of older games, but recently, they have added brand new games to their line up, and some great upcomming ones as well. Right now Gametap has a deal going...$0.99 for the first month. So it's a really great deal even to just check it out.

If you guys have any questions i would be happy to answer them.

New Additions:

Battlestations: Midway - Just released yesterday, so I haven't played it yet. But supposed to be very fun.

Inferno - Good graphics and fun 3rd person action game.

Entire Commandos Series - Including new FPS. The strategy ones are gold, but the FPS is meerly OK. Worth a play though.

Entire Hitman Series - Everyone knows these games.

Psychonaughts - Absolutely fantastic and unique game. Every gamer should play it.

Just Cause - GTA type sandbox game. Beautiful visuals. Fun gameplay. A little hampered by wonky driving physics though.

Sam and Max Series - Fun adventure games with great sense of humor. These games are gametap exclusives.

Combat Mission Series - Excellent tactical based war game. Hardcore players only :P

Overlord - Very fun and humorous 3rd persion action/rpg game. Worth a play, and very overlooked by the general community.

Prince of Persia Series - Don't really need to say anything here. These games speak for themselves.

Second Sight - Pretty good 3rd person action game. Has some neat gameplay revolving around psychic abilities.

Notable Older Games:

Baldur's Gate Series - Includes expansion packs. I really don't need to comment on this one do I? :P

Planescape Torment - One of the greatest RPG's period.

Icewind Dale Series - Includes expansion packs. Also a gem of a RPG.

Heroes of Might and Magic Series - Every game up to IV. Includes expansion packs. Some of my favorite games.

Dues Ex - Excellent game. Mixture of FPS and RPG.

Warlords: Battlecry - Another excellent game similar to the HOMM games.

Sensible Soccer 2006 - Really fun soccer game. Not too flashy, but the game mechanics are solid. Can be played by two people on the same PC.

Age of Magic Series - A seriously overlooked strategy game. Beautiful visuals mixed with deep strategy.

Disciples Series - Includes expansion packs. Another incredible RPG type strategy game. One of my favorites.

IL2 - One of the finest combat flight sims period.

X2: The Threat - Awesome space combat sim.

Freespace Series - The second one is quite simply (IMO) the best space combat sim ever.

Thief - Near and dear to every real PC gamer's heart :P

Notable Arcade and Console Games:

Bubble Bobble - Don't ask, guilty pleasure :P

1941 Series - Very fun shooter.

Metal Slug Series - One of my favorite arcade games. Just blow stuff up.

Shinning Force - Great tactical RPG from the sega days. Even worth a play today if you never tried it. Starts out slow, but once you get going its awesome. You will truly fall in love with the characters in your army. And with dozens of choices and leveling/supplying of your soldiers, the customization is endless.

Phantasy Star Series - Another great old school rpg. Might be a little too dated though for new players.

Entire Street Fighter Series - You played them, no need for explanation.

Legacy of Kain Series - Very well done action platformer. Great stories and plots.

Altered Beast - RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!!!!!!

There is literally houndreds of these types of games, but these are the ones I can think of off hand.

Notable Upcomming Games:

Clive Barker's: Jericho - Yup, scheduled for release in tandem with the retail release. How's that for new?

American McGee's Grimm - If it is anything like Alice (which it looks like it will), gamers will be in for a treat.

God's Land of infinity - Ok RPG, not my **** but some old school gamers might dig it.

IGI2 Covert Strike - Don't know much about it, should be ok though.

Mealstrom - Again, never played it.

Penumbra: Overture - Played the demo a while back. These once amature devs have impressed the game world with thier demo, and now have a full fledged game. Deffinetly worth a play.

Sam and Max: Season 2 - Can't wait for this one. I love the series.

Kids Games:

My 4 year old loves these games. If you are a parent and have young kids, they have a HUGE selection. i am only going to list the one my 4 year old plays though.

Aurthur's Series - Great series that has everything from pre-k to 5th grade. Fun but also teaches them basix skills like letters, numbers, math, ect.

Sammy's Science Treehouse - Fun game. Teaches them about weather and other science stuff.

Carmen Sandiego - A little advanced for her, but I play with her.

Oregon Trail series - Very cool old school game. Some of you might have played this while in school.

Freddie Fish - Another fun educational type game.

Reader Rabbit - Good educational game. One of the better titles.

I see Dnuggs is in pimp mode.

I tried Gametap late last year and found it enjoyable. I didn't continue my subscription at the time because I felt I had played through most of the games on the lineup that interested me. I was thinking of signing up again to see the new lineup and since some of the older games would be more enjoyable now that I have a gamepad.

Ya, I basically had done the same thing. I tried it around 7 or 8 months ago, found it fun, but in the end their game line up was a little less then stellar. I just resubscribed a few weeks ago (still on my $0.99 trial) and am really impressed with the current and upcomming line up.

Plus, the selection of kids games really makes it worth it. It's pretty funny, my 4 year old knows how to navigate the games list, download, and start them up :P

Thats the only reason I posted this, I am really impressed in how far the service has come since it was first released.

SO how does it work?

You sign up and download games?
Is there a time limit for each game?
An additional cost per game?
Can you have only a certain amount of games downloaded at one time?

Sign up at: gametap.com

Download the client, and install it. Once installed, to download/play any game is just a matter of browsing through the interface (which is VERY nice and easy to use. like I said, my 4 year can manage to do it). Once you find a game to play, just click "download". When the game is finished downloading, just click "play".

It's kind of a like fully interactive STEAM application. Check out this video to get an idea:

http://www.games.net/video/bts/106120/gametap-video-tour/

No time limits.

No additional costs per game.

No limits to how many games you have downloaded at one time. Currently I have around 25gb's of games downloaded.

Another nice feature is your account is NOT tied to your computer. So you can play gametap on any computer as long as you have your login info and download the client to that pc. Of course you might have to download the game you want to play again on the computer (games are local content). Nice feature IMO. I only have one subscription, but have the client on both my PC and my wife's pc. This way the kids can play the kid games on her pc :P

Gametap is actually kinda cool, I tried the first month of the paid subscription out at $0.99 and discovered it was actually worth paying the full subscription price. It's worth checking out for at least the cheap first month to see if you like it.

Oh ya, even if you are a cheap arse and don't want to spend $0.99 to try it, the have a FREE service that is ad supported. They rotate the small selection of FREE games regurarly too. Also, the ads are not that bad, normally just a 9 second video before the game starts.

Current Free Titles:

Blood Omen 2

Marine Empire

Commandos 3

Myst Online: Uru

Metal Slug

2020 Super Baseball

X2: The Threat

Laser Squad Nemesis

Desciples II

Dark Stalkers

King of the Monsters

ect ect here...just go to this link to see all the current freeplay games :P

Not a whole lot of interest for this I see...

Any reason some of you might be turned off to it?

Sounds pretty damn cool. Especially if you want to play some of those older games that your stores dont carry anymore, and if you dont want to pay 60 bucks for a "vintage" Fallout 2 disk from Amazon.com or something. I think I will give it a try when I get a job and some disposable income.

Yeah, I tried that a while ago, there was even some talk for the new Ubi games being free for a short while, but I guess that didn't happen. I downloaded Commandos3 and yes indeed, it did work and the ads didn't bother me the least, too bad that the game itself didn't live up to its predecessors. I'm prolly gonna give X2 a shot as well, otherwise I don't have much interest in the service due to my slow internet connection.

I don't think it's a bad service by any means....

I just feel that I have better things to spend my money on....or not spend my money on. Any game(s) that I want to play, I own. Maybe at some point in time down the road I might try it out, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.
