No. You need to know what socket type you have.

What processor do you have currently? And how long have you had it? I'll tell you right now it will be difficult to find an AMD that isn't socket AM2 now...my motherboard is socket 939 and I'm struggling to find any processors for it (I can find some, but they aren't an upgrade for me unfortunately).

Best thing to do would be to run CPU-Z, it will tell you the cpu specs, motherboard model, ram type/speed.

As far as AMD, there are at least 4 types of Athlon CPU sockets. Athlon Slot type (I had an Athlon 750 - the cpu itself looked similar in size to an SNES game), then there's socket 939 (most of the early Athlon 64 cpu's, Opterons, and Athlon X2's), then socket 940 (it has an extra pin over the 939's), and most new Athlon CPU's use socket AM2 (usually those capable motherboards use DDR 2 memory).

My Opteron 170 CPU uses socket 939.

Don't forget about Socket A. I have two micro boxes with AMD 2400 XP+'s serving as media center boxes.

Not to mention the Socket 754, which was a limited board.. good luck finding anything fast then what you got if you end up with this board.. i had to run the same chip for 4 becuase AMD decide they would come out with the 939 right after i bought it..

1. Not much

2. I'll leave the price searching up to you.

Your board may be able to support a phenom but I wouldn't know. You'd have to find the cpu support list for your motherboard.

Same exact thing happaned with me and 939 and AM2!! AMD needs to stop changing their chipsets so often, so us guys dont see our motherboards antiqueted within a year or two.

--@OP NO, take my word for it.

Correction: If he has an AM2 socket, he MIGHT be able to use an AM2+ cpu. It will most definitely fit in the socket, but that doesn't guarantee it's supported by his motherboard.

If his computer's three years old, he's most likely going to have a socket 939 at best...mine's three years old and I have a socket 939...

ok i didnt word that one good enough, i meant whats the cheapest cpu i can get to work on that type, im trying to rebuild my old computer for a friend, who needs it just to go online and minor things like that, im try to figure out if i should buy a better one and put my old one in the computer, or just buy a cheaper one for the other pc. they both use the same cpu bofore (so thats all i need for it to work)
