I just bought a new psu, motherboard and a e2140 which ocs really nice. Just ordered my evga 8800 gts sc about 1 hour ago. Right now i only have 1 gb of ram, and really dont want to spend the $50 on the ram if I don't have to. I would like to eat this month.

So are there any games that really need 2 gb is so which. I have never run into a game 1gb of ram couldn't handle.

2 gigs is really what you want to aim for. especially after you factor in the overhead usage by your OS, and any other background apps, and more importantly services that need to sit in your RAM. if your going to use vista you most defintely should be using 2gigs of RAM.

If its between eating and a games needing it, you need to eata lot more than the game needs an extra GB of RAM. It can wait till next month... :)

Do any games need it? No. Do any games perform worlds better with 2 gigs? Yes. It's really up to you. Like Zboater said...I would choose eating.

i got a vista lap top with 1 gb ram and vista eats ram alot of times i find my self at 50% of my ram being used just on normal tastes. i would get 2 gbs of ram. the 1 gb ram is fine for normal use however in the new games coming out your going to need alot more ram then 1 gb.

I really saw a difference between 1gb and 2gb in games but not son much in general PC use. it makes the game allot smoother and make the game play better when you have a high ping

You're thinking of 2 x 512MB.

Under Vista, yes.

Well, actually, you'd probably want 2GB for gaming under XP too.

Ya I always recommend the Patriot ram to people. Such a great deal, 2gb of high quality ram for $57. That's $102 with $45 mail in rebate. Although I doubt he can wait 3 months for a rebate check.

Vista is a pig on memory. It runs slow as hell on 1 gig.

I don't understand. How could the amount of RAM, speed up your games? Faster RAM ya, but amount? Doesn't a program/game need or don't need RAM? I also don't see how you would need more than 1.5GB on XP compared to 2GB on Vista. If Vista eats a lot of RAM, I would think that XP would get the same performance with 512MB less.

No game requires 2 gigs of RAM on its own, but you really do need to 2GB of RAM to run your computer efficiently while playing a lot of games. I only have 1GB on my current computer, and my comp goes through some major hell playing a lot of games.

But, how could amount affect the speed of a game? Does it have to wait for RAM to become available?

Ram is responsible for loading your environments, view distance etc. So more ram allows better loading of the environment and just multitasking as well, and seeing as how vista is a ram eater and bf2142 was using1 GB of ram its better to have 2GB in vista. HOwever to the thread starter if money is that tight you can wait until november when crysis comes out, that's when 2GB of ram is really necessary, but yeah just wait until you can afford it, eating is kinda important and it would kill your gaming experience if you were hungry. Oh and this is so ghetto but for a quick meal to fill you up just eat a slice of breed with pasta sauce its very filling, cheap and tastes decfent. $5.00 is what it cost to live on that for a week.

I'm still not sure if I should buy an extra 2 gigs of RAM, since 32 bit Vista can't recognize more that much.

The other day Iwas running an antivirus scan, burning a DVD and listening to music at the same time. My whole 2 gigs of memory was used up and my system was slowed right down. My dual core processor was barely used, but my RAM was maxed out.

I could obviously use more memory, but what's the point if Windows won't use it?

^if you have 32bit then its no use, if you had 64bit though then if you got cash go buy some ram. maybe you should work on getting a 64bit version.

So, by having more RAM it can multitask without waiting for more RAM to become available?

 Hahaha...

You know... I have been able to go like 12 hours without food and not even notice because I was so into a game. I don't know about a month though. No offense, but, if you don't leave even $50 open in your budget after food, you have more problems than game performance. What if your tire popped! :o

close, having more ram means you can mulitask more because you have more "Space" we will call it to run more programs at once. However thats in general, for games it just helps everything load faster, this goes for maps, characters, environments, that kind of stuff. also keeps the game running smooth.

How could someone only have $50 for the month for food. You better stock up on the Kraft Dinner and not the KD brand, you better hit up generic. I think I would save another month for the PC and eat. Or atleast hit my friends up for $50 to borrow. AfterI bought the PC ofcourse and before they knew I got it. :D

Kraft Dinner
Hot Dogs and Buns
French Fries
Fruit and Veggies
Bread (make toast)

There is your food you need if all you got is $50

I spend maybe $20 a month on food truthfully. I'm a chef I eat at work 95% of the time, free food is great.

I actually prefer generic Mac and Cheese over the Kraft stuff. It actually tastes better to me.

yes you need 2gb if you want most new games to run how they are ment to. bioshock is an exception. ok most games need about 1.4-5gb so you could go for 1.5 but I would recoment going for 2gbs as there are a few games that can use all of 2gb

my Vista is using 1GB of RAM right after booting it, so it leaves only 1GB of ram for other apps and games when you have 2GB of RAM.

so 2GB should be a minimum when running Vista. i have 3GB now since the memory ain't that expensive at the moment. games are using more and more RAM in the future, so i doesn't hurt having some extra memory on your system.
