A few weeks ago a good friend and I were having a heated discussion about the ESRB giving Manhunt 2 from rockstar games a peliminary rating of adults only and what ramifications this would have to the games sales and how much Rockstar would dummy down the game to get it sold to a wider market. His contention was that the ESRB had in effect sunk the release before it even released and they were an evil orginization and should ease up on thier ratings. I wholeheartedly disagreed with him saying it's not the ESRB sinking the title it was the large retail outlets which refused to sell AO games that would in effect curtail the sales. I clicked over to ESRB because I was curious about which if any AO titles were even worthy of playing and to my suprise ESRB has GTA San Andreas rated as AO! Omg I thought to myself I rate GTA:SA as one of my top 5 PC games of all time and I bought the game at Walmart which is one of the large retailers which refuses to sell AO rated games. Hrmm I'm puzzled now because the CD case says it's Mature rated so I'm not sure whats up there. I'm not sure the exact median age of most gamers are today but the last figures I've heard put the age at around 25-30 years of age. Isn't it time that the game makers and retailers started zoning in more on this target audience? I for one would buy any game regardless of it's rating if it was fun and I'd probably be more apt to purchase a AO game just for the fact that it would probably contain more adult themes, humor and issues adults live with today and isn't realism a good thing in games?

Well no, because we don't have ESRB in Finland, we have PEGI. It doesn't and never has affected the game I or anyone else buys. Retailers don't care about them either.

Here in Brazil games and films are not forbidden to a certain age (except for porn) it's only recommended.

GTA SA is recommended for people over 18 here, but not forbidden for younger. It's a great thing here, people believe it's up to the parents, not the government.

ERSB is just there for parents and people who don't want to see specific content within a game (visible blood, vulgar language etc), as to which both don't apply to me, so I just purchase whatever I feel is in my interest and woth my time to play.

never. Most of the stuff that the ESRB rate a M rated shouldn't even be an M rated game.(A lot of them would probably be rated PG-13 if it was put under review by the movie rating board.)

Most games such as HL2, farcry, and doom 3, would probably get a PG-13 rating if reviewed by the movie rating board. Very few games are truly deserving of an M rating, like san andreas, manhunt, or postal.

There has been a poll on gamefaqs about this and just about everyone agreed ESRB is just a waste, I just love how parents like to blame everything else for their **** parenting.

If a game is good, I buy it. Besides, the difference between AO and M is ONE YEAR. WAY over-rated.

I've never even looked at an ESRB rating when buying a game I don't think. I'm over 18 though, so it's not like it'd matter anyways.

The ESRB is useless and full of policality-correct **** they're just a "feel good bout yourself" division of the ESA the main videogame lobby.

The whole issue to do a little censorship so hypocrits in washington doesn't respond to mainstream media BS and label videogame besides alchohol, hard drugs and smokes.

It's useless outside the U.S, Europeans & Asians have their own standard. In canada nobody gives a damn about censorship, hell most teenager have sexual relations at 14-16 so what the point, plus any thirteen year old kid can watch SAW3, so they've seen violence in more detail and probably had some sort sex, but woe is me it's "evil".

In the old days Developers used to recommend playing age themselves, now they send footage of the game (along with a couple benj) to the ESRB, WOW effective. And all the while they give **** about educating parents on gaming choices, right we're all dumb.

But then videogames are still a taboo, like sex and violence

No! The ESRB doesn't ever effect my decision on whether or not to buy a game. The only time I ever pay any heed to it is when I am recommending a game to parents of small children (like under age 13).

You are right about the age demographic. Almost 75% of the gaming population is between ages 18-35, which makes them legal adults. It would be nice if developers were to switch their focus over and start making games for their majority audience. I would really like it since I am in that majority age range and have been growing increasingly frustrated with the distinct lack of mature content in games, and censorship of said content. Sadly, developers switching to address the mature crowd will never happen because politicians and the mainstreams views are still the stereotype of "video games are for kids." They are stuck in the 80's or 90's and as long as they remain there things won't ever change. At least not in America...

Where I live the shop owners will sell you anything no matter your age so it's cool but it is still controlled it's a good balance. In North America and Europe I think there a little to tough I don't need the lady at Wal-Mart telling me Halo 2 has "intense violence, gore....." and some other bulls**t just let me buy the game and leave Grandma.

isn't it fun that have the legal age to consume "sinful" product like beer and AO rated title

by the way did you know in the US you can get more jail if you sell a minor an AO game than if you commit rape.

but then in Georgia they charged a 17 years old with rape & child molestation because he had sex (with consent) with his girlfriend who was 15. he's been in jail for 10 years now.

The problem with consoles opening the AO door is that most AO games are porn (look at the ESRB list). Manhunt 2 would probably sell better because of the controversy around the AO version if Sony, Nintendo, and/or Microsoft allowed them to put the AO version on their consoles. Rockstar specifically added stuff in that they knew would have to be cut for an MA. The free press generated is going to help them sell copies more than any commercial will.

Never. If I found a quality game, I would find any way I could to purchase it. I just lucked out now since I'm old enough to get any game, no matter the rating.

never effected me! Im 15 years old and have been playing Mature games sence I was like 8 or 9, My first offical mature game was Half life. Ahh....the days.

Anyway, my parents dont really care, they look on the back of the cover too see whats on it but they dont care. I have games like GTA SA ect.

My parents dont like the Sex stuff, but when they question about it I go to http://www.gamecritics.com/findgame/A

On the web they have on each game a consumer guide that have details on whats in the game. For example: http://www.gamecritics.com/node/214

take a look.

The only time I look at ratings is when I buy games for my kids. I'll usually try out demos etc. first for games that interest them that are rated at a higher age range. It all just comes down to making a judgement call in relation to their level of maturity.

I've always thought it was pretty stupid when retailers won't carry adult rated titles in the US. Retailers over here (UK) have no problems selling games rated 18 to the proper target audience. Manhunt 2 is one of only a very few games that were deemed to step over the line which is why it got banned, and I'm ok with that. But then, I've never been into that kind of game in the first place, so I won't miss it.

Ratings are fine as a guideline, and personally I've never had a problem with them.
