I didn't look into this until my friend told me his games ran better for him if he had them on higher resolutions. This didn't make sense.

For example, I've been playing FEAR and STALKER on either 800x600 resolution or 1024x768 resolution and I've been getting bits of lag here and there. After I switched to 1280x1024 (highest possible for my monitor), I'm not noticing any lag at all in STALKER or FEAR. So, do higher resolutions increase game performance, or is there some unseen force making my games play out smootheR?

That's impossible , higher resolutions takes off alot frames per second, no matter what game it is , the lower resolution - the smoother it will go. (Of course , if you get higher FPS than 25 in high resolution , it's better to stay with the higher , cos it's more detailed.)

Technically, the lower the resolution the higher your framerate. This then provides better performance at the expense of visual quality.

Yes, I ran them at the same settings. I noticed an increase, and I'm not bull****ing you. That's why I thought I'd ask here...didn't make sense to me.

How exactly do I "benchmark"? And would that work with the trial version, because I can't get the full version of fraps to work.

Press F11 while in-game , when you're finished , press F11 again. (Or cheack FRAPS settings)

With FEAR you can go into the options and test the graphics in a benchmark they have set up. Just change the resolution and then run the setup and it tells your min, average, and max framerates. Also, you should be playing at way above 800x600 on your setup(according to your sig). I have a much worse system and run at 1280x1024 just fine.

Could also be a driver bug causing lower performance at odd resolutions.

well actually think i depends on the type of computer you have if its a fast computer you should probaly try the resolution on high if its slow you should make it low if its in between you should make it how the game starts with it
