I just got a new samsung home theater system but it only has one digital optical audio port. If I just put that in my tv will my ps3, 360 and cable box give me 5.1 surround sound or do I need an optical audio splitter to get this? I've been reading mixed things online saying that most tvs only give you 2.0 but then some say no. So i'm confused because i'm new to this home theater stuff. My tv is a Vizio VX32L.

It depends if your TV supports 5.1 so if your TV supports 5.1 audio then yes. I have my optical audio out going from my TV to my receiver because my TV supports 5.1 audio signals.

in my tvs manual it states this about the optical audio port....

If your sound system has a SPDIF (optical) digital audio input you can connect it to the optical DIGITAL
AUDIO OUT (white area) at the rear of the LCD HDTV. This is active when receiving digital audio with
the program being viewed no matter what input (TV, AV, Component or HDMI) is being used.

is that what you mean?

Yeah this is pretty much true. Except you have to have an actual 5.1 signal going to the TV to come out. So red/white cables won't cut it because they only transmit 2 channel audio or fake 5.1 Dolby ProLogic 2 stuff that sounds like complete crap compared to actual 5.1. Best off using HDMI to connect to the TV, hopefully you have enough inputs
