I used to have those speakers and they plugged into the back of my motherboard. A soundcard would produce better quality though

No. Most motherboard audio are capable of 7.1 sound.

Of course, many motherboards (mine included) have 7.1 sound at the rear port only if the front audio port is not hooked up. If I hook up my front audio port, the rear audio port reverts to 2.1 which is fine with me since my speaker set is an old 2.1 Z2300.

Edit:

You might also want to check the rear plate and see how many audio ports you have. If it's just 3 (mic, speaker/headphone, aux), then probably not. If there's 6 ports, then it probably can do 5.1.

no. most modern mobos offer realtek HD audio via back ports for up to 7.1 that being said depending on your speakers a dedicated soundcard can be noticeably better

its either that or the creative labs one and yet the people from the store wouldnt tell me the warranty for the creative labs speaker system when i emailed them(it wasnt on the site either). what would be a better 5.1 speaker then the z506?

What's your budget? Any 5.1 set for that price is going to be poor quality since you're getting 6 speakers for $80. That works out at $13 per speaker.

You can get decent 2.0 or 2.1 for that price, but 5.1 won't be high quality for that money.

That's right, ShadowLord is in Sri Lanka. If memory serves, you ended up getting a nice headet already. Is this speaker set really for the surround sound effect, or are you looking for high-fidelity audio? Given your options, I'd lean towards Logitech, though I'd see if there's a boutique audio store in a nearby major city if you're not living in one yourself. Happy gaming, Boz

Your options for headphones are superior to your options for speakers. I would buy the Audio Technica we'd previously discussed over a mediocre 2.1 speaker system. As an aside, it's your life, but if you're living paycheck-to-paycheck and can't buy speakers because you need shoes, you might want to rethink your financial priorities and start saving some money. Happy gaming, Boz
