k thanks.
im thinking of 8600gt tigerdirect in canada has it listed for 99 after rebate....good card for what I have or no?
barbuane
I have one. It isn't that great for crysis. It will certainly play it, but for a few bucks more you could get way more bang for your buck.
what do you have in mind and at what cost...like I said its after rebate so I could spend little more on a card
barbuane
You may want to try a ATI 3850 if you don't want to shell out the cash for a 8800gt. Haven't looked at the benchmarks, but I bet it is a better deal than a 8600gt.
actually 3850 is listed at 243.99 on site here in canada....I wish I could buy that one but no go for me, thanks for your help though

Newegg sells them for 179. I don't know if they will ship to canada. Can you find a different store?
found this site called ncix....they say 179 for 3850, made by diamond
maybe kinda noobie but I am using nvidia 6600 right now on a msi board....will I have probs with an ati card?
barbuane
you should check to see if you have the right interface on your motherboard (pci express) and a power supply with enough power and the right leads. I would also at least take a brief look at a few benchmarks for the card. It looks good from the specs, but do it anyway just to make sure you are getting what you want.
ya I have pciE
think I might have prob though my psu is only 400watt
barbuane
You also need to make sure it has whatever leads the video card requires. Many pcie cards need a 6 pin power connector. Check up on how many watts the card requires. If it is a high quality PSU you might be able to fudge it, but your milage may vary.
id get the 2600xt its better and cheaper http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=25028&vpn=2600XT256PE3SB&manufacture=Diamondk thanks.

edit: ^^this guy might have what you need^^
I know I dont have that, but I can buy adaptors for the power connectors cant I, think some cards come with them but not sure about this one
barbuane
I don't know if they make adapters. You would be really pushing your luck with one though. Now that I know your psu is a little older, I am hesitant to recommend a medium-high end card. The 8600gt is really not a good card for the money though. I don't really follow ATI's product line, but they might have a mid range card that is more suitable.

its over 2x as faster and in some cases 3x for the same cost
