I just got Portal for my PC, but it says that I need to download some internet crap. I don't have the internet at home and there was no hint on the box that I needed the internet to play. I always check to see if I need the internet for a game and this one didn't say anything about it. So, do I need the internet, because if I do I'm just going to return it.

You do need the internet to set up your Steam account for it, which is required. Once you have gotten Steam set up and the game installed then you can just play in offline mode. If you can't hook your PC up to an internet connection though you are pretty much out of luck.

Given that the TC managed to post that particular comment, I would say he does have that option..

Not necessarily. This could be a public terminal (such as a library computer). The catch is that Portal, like all Steam games, must be verified before it can run. This need only occur once, and you could probably get away with doing it with a dialup. But for someone with no way whatsoever to hook his computer up, it's a PITA.

If you have a phone line but no internet connection, I advise signing up to a pay as you go dial up service and use it to activate your version of portal. It'll only cost you the price of the time you use, you don't even have to use it after. I know here in the UK BT offer this. http://register.btinternet.com/cgi-bin/startup?version=ie55&ex=1&prmt=ANY007

Or if the TC is in the US they could try using Netzero or Juno free internet services. Both are owned by the same company and are add driven.

I didn't know those guys offered a free option (it's ten hours a month, according to the website), but for the rare product activation in which you don't need it further, it's an option. All that's needed is a dialup modem.

this may seem a little odd to me but if you do not have internet how are you on these forums.... the only thing i could think of is that you're in a internet cafe.
