Do I need the interne for Portal?

I just got Portal for my PC, but it says that I need to download some internet crap. I don't have the internet at home and there was no hint on the box that I needed the internet to play. I always check to see if I need the internet for a game and this one didn't say anything about it. So, do I need the internet, because if I do I'm just going to return it.

You do need the internet to set up your Steam account for it, which is required. Once you have gotten Steam set up and the game installed then you can just play in offline mode. If you can't hook your PC up to an internet connection though you are pretty much out of luck.thanatose
