Do I need to play system shock in order to understand system shock two?

Where do I even get these games?

Almost better you do NOT play the first one.

It is all explained pretty neatly, + SS1 is REALLY REALLY bad.

Not that it's bad it's just that it's really old and hardly playable by today's standards.

I remember playing SS1 when it was first released. It was anything but bad. as for SS2 no you don't need to play SS1.

SS1 in its day was ahead of its time and was an outstanding game. That said its undeniable that by todays standards the control scheme for it is.... incredibly clunky, clunky enough to turn me off from playing it for very long.
