My computer stats are in my sig. Do I need to update yet? I want to update when the next "Q6600" and "8800GTX" comes out. Because as far as i'm aware, i heard those lasted a good 3 years or some ****. And do you think i'd be able to get 600-700$ for this computer if i were to sell it on craiglist for example ?

Whether or not you have to upgrade is really your decision, if you are having problems doing what you usually do, then upgrade otherwise save some money and keep what you got.

Don't know about how much they're willing to pay on craiglist but i would not buy your PC for that money as you can build a faster one for the same price brand new. Your PC is still great what games do you want to upgrade for?, theres not many games out to see a great benefit to warrant a new $1k build. (that is the sum you would have to dish out for getting a "upgrade" ratehr than a new build with performance near your current PC.)

Your HD4890 should play games just fine 1920*1080, i dont think games you play fine now will be unplayable, a handfull games witch the HD4890 have trouble with in your current resolution will stay nearly the same with the bigger scree. (thinking about crysis?) The diffrence wont be as big that you belive, i bet the games you play now wil do fine @ 1920*1080. (apart from crysis? :P )

Can you show me how to build a computer that's faster than his for less than $600? Operating system included?

Not possible. You'd get 60% of a good PC for that price.

OFC. i have already made sevral builds in that pricerange with a ph2 Q and gtx460 4Gb ram, not including OS tho, but yes for $700 i think that is fully possible.

The main part about my post was that he'd need a 1k build to make it worth the effort, its all in my post preatty hard to miss.

I agree that the TC doesn't need to upgrade or build anything new right now. His rig is still strong.

Nobody could have known how well the Q6600 and 8800GTX would hold up over the long haul back when they came out. It's almost impossible to predict which hardware will do the same.

The market is to unstable to estimate that. The 88 series were erly in their age and the Q66 was too, i wouldn't hold mu breath to wait for hardware to do this. Today theres the i7 990X, that CPU should have no trouble holding 3 years, a HD5970 should without a doubth play games for 3 years. So theres already stuyff that will do fine in the matter of a few years but it'll cost you a whole sack of cash. Wait because theres only a few weeks before new hardware should arrive. (HD69xx and gtx5xx) The game devs. are currently focusing most of their time to console gaming, i bet the hardware we use now will contine to play games a few years ahead just fine as consoles are very near their peak performance, the PC hardware is currently sevral times faster if they want to optimice for PC hardware. So wait a bit longer you wont see a big diffrence in the most games, theres always a few games that stand asside the consoles and do put strain on our hardware but how many are they really?, they're not worth to spend a fortune over in my oppinion anyway. What about the OS?, if you already have it keep it for your next build.

I am comfused from time to times, i just dont understand what your reffering to. (or if it's you that is a bit unclear. ;) ) Your saying that you will buy a PC for $800 witch is just a tad better than the one you got? :? Because your not get $800 for the one you got? Right? For it to even be worth the money and the effort trying to get a better build your looking at a $1k+ build at the very minimum. I wouldn't uprage to anything less than a i7 from a C2Q (theres not much diffrence to a Ph2 Q from a C2Q), motherboards and CPU's for s1336(i7) does cost quite a bit. Just wait and hold out for better hardware to arrive.

Its very very difficult to get your old OS working on a new build.... You could however try creating a hardware profile which will have drivers installed and chosen for your new build, but i have only seen this work once so probably a 15% chance of working... You could just call microsoft and have the keycode you used ready, and say you had a HDD failure and now your OS cannot be activated by the code, they should either reactivate it or give you a new one, it'll probably be a single use one though as it's from the student discount thing.
