I've just been given a laptop with xp installed, wondering if it would be better/more efficient if i had Windows 7?
These are the specs:
Pentium 4 3.40Ghz
1.5GB Ram
80GB Hdd
So, should I upgrade?

you would need to run the 32bit because you have less than 4gb of ram, but, I would highly reccomend windows 7 although you dont need it
Um... why? 64 bit OSes can access 4GB+ of RAM but they don't need 4GB of RAM to run. If the processor is 64 bit there are plenty of benefits to running a 64 bit OS other than the access to extra memory. So TC if your computer has a EM64T enabled Pentium 4 Windows 7 64 bit would be worth a look. Although without more information about your hardware it's hard to say how well 7 would run.you would need to run the 32bit because you have less than 4gb of ram, but, I would highly reccomend windows 7 although you dont need it

He would need 32 bit because his processor is only 32bit. It has nothing to do with how much RAM he has. Although, 1.5 GBs is a little small for win7. As win7 is a huge memory hog. It takes about 1GB just for the system.you would need to run the 32bit because you have less than 4gb of ram, but, I would highly reccomend windows 7 although you dont need it

I have more problems with windows 7 than any other os, driver issue after driver issue. Windows vista 64 bit with service pack 2 is my pick.
Dear d-rtboy
WHAT? A Pentium 4 3.40Ghz 32 bits? LOLOLOLOLOLOL. That is the funniest thing i have ever heard. Intel stop produce 32 bits cpu almost 10 years ago. Remember when AMD released his first 64 bits cpu? Intel released his not long after.
Ya some people dont understand that, people told me they think there processor wasnt 64 bit, I thought is it really that old?Dear d-rtboy

So he asks a question and only thing you can do is laugh
i have five PC-s that have worse specs than that and also
some that can wipe floor with anything many here have
should i make fun of somebody now hmmm ?
immature of you sir
TC stick with XP on that system

TerroRizing
The original P4 had no 64-bit support, only the Prescott series (the 3.4ghz 650 is of them). That was just 5 years ago, not 10 years ago...
Anyway, there is no point in installing a 64-bit OS on such an old PC.
Dude, seriously. STFU. I own a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 that has no 64 bit support. The only thing funny here is your lack of knowledge of computers. Plus, if you look at his specs. XP, 80 GB hdd, etc, it stands to reason that his laptop is indeed 10 years old.Dear d-rtboy
