Currently I have Sims 2, Family Fun Stuff, Pets... And although I like all of them, I would suggest you get the ones like Open For Biz & Pets before you get any of the content (objects) type add ons (like Family Fun Stuff). They don't add as much joy to the game as the simulation type expansions do... unless you are really into having that perfect "Victorian" house or similar. For that type of add on... try the downloads on the site. (Since they're free!)

I have them all and recommend buying them and installing them in order.  Skip pets it you want as it was by far the worst.

Ya, you need it for the others too work.

Get university, nightlife and open for business (get Family fun stuff, glamour life stuff for extra objects if you really want them).

Pets, as basersx said, is the weakest of the lot.

Yup.  Uni is good because of the musical instruments and carrier's it adds, Night Life is good because of the cars, and OFB is the best one as it adds the most game play content to the game of all of them.

Seasons is also pretty cool because it adds food and additional careers.

Yes you need to have The Sims 2 to run any expansions. I gave up on the expansion packs after Nightlife. I hardly play Sims anymore anyways. I can't keep up with all those things.
