When ever I'm playing online in Call of Duty 4, my ping will jump to 200 or 300. I notice a SIGNIFICANT drop in fps. It drops to around 5-10 fps. Is this because of a lag spike, or is it a hardware/driver problem? It also goes away faster if I alt-tab a few times.
well i know drop in FPS can cause a high ping, but i suppose if the gpu isn't being fed much info then it cant produce images resulting in drop of FPS...
But, can only 200-300 ping do that? I mean, people play at those rates normally don't they? Do you think it's a hardware problem? Because it never happens in singleplayer, where it just suddenly drops to such a low fps.
i wouldn't ever play at 200-300 ping, i had a ~250 ping on a server one time, knifed a guy, and thought i missed so i started to shoot when he dropped dead and showed that i knife him, that big of a ping and delay, i just can't deal with
Its odd, in some games like WoW, that ping is perfectly acceptable. I never really play FPS online on the PC though, so it is hard to say the effect there. High ping will drop your framerate, and the stability of the connection is pretty key. I hate to play games on a wireless connection.. seems like the connection comes in bursts- creating some stuttering.
