For some reason I was under the impression that most people have moved on to TF2.

CS 1.6 is still as played as it was in 2003. 3000-5000 servers at any day, and at any hour, at least half of them full. I'm not exagerating, hell, i've ben playing it for a couple of years now. I doubt the fanbase will ever shrink, its requirements are low, there are so many new user-made maps, and modded servers to keep you playing forever, and its gameplay is solid. Counter Strike is the equivalent of WoW, in the FPS industry, as in its the most popular FPS ever.
CS Source, i don't know, i don't play it that often, its just to easy to get a headshot, and to recieve one.

TF2 doesn't even have half the amount of people playing that CS and CSS do.

I only play on vanilla servers in TF2 (the way the game was meant to be played), and I actually have a hard time finding a game now and then. In the earlier and later hours, basically no one is playing on vanilla servers.. Surprising for me, as I thought TF2 was uber popular..So do i just get counter strike
or source or 1.6
im lost
are they all diff games

If you're new to CS then get Source.
I still play it whenever I get a chance There are still a ton of servers up and running custom maps/small modes or just vanilla maps. I think Counter Strike has a higher then normal learning curve and can be pretty punishing and overwhelming to new players since you get one life and have to wait until the next round starts.
Another one I would recommend is Day of Defeat Source which kind of plays like Counter Strike except its class based and you have more then one life but still equally as fun to play especially the custom maps which can be a blast to play.
