Halo 2 never really had a large following since it required Win Vista which was junk at the time. Lost Planet is likely dead online, considering it's fairly old now, was a crumby port (if I remember right) and never had a big following to begin with.
COD4 on the other hand is fairly active, you are probably better off learning to use the keyboard and mouse then messing around with a controller however.
Dont really know about the other two games sorry, I use Pinnacle Profiler & Xbox360 wired controller on some games and it works like a treat, i havent used X-padder yet so i cant comment on that. Maybe someone else might know?
CoD4 still has tons of servers, most of them are running mods though. Halo 2 I don't know, it never really had much of an online community on the PC, but the original Halo is still alive and well. Lost Planet I have no idea but I don't think there's anyone playing online.
DAMMIT Why would you ever want to use a controller in a PC FPS? They're terrible compared to mice, and even if you're one of the best console COD players out there you'd still get destroyed by even a mediocre player using a mouse. Anyway, COD4 is still popular. The same cannot be said for Halo 2 or Lost Planet which were never popular on PC to begin with. Hell, I'm pretty sure Halo 2 was DOA when it came to PC.
nobody plays lost planet mp. this being said it does have xbox controller support natively.
sometimes you will find somebody playing halo 2 online. but not very often any more. mainly b/c M$ neglect gfw like a deformed child in a spartan household
Unfortunately, Lost Planet is pretty much dead. You might get a game going if you start one during prime time, but it's not a sure thing. It's too bad, because I actually really enjoyed that game's multiplayer.
Cod 4 tons of people playing and Lost planet is totally dead IDK about halo 2 might have a few people playing but halo ce is alot more popular if your looking for a halo game to play online on pc.
You can map the keys to an xbox controller with a program called x-padder or another is pinnacle profiler :D

I prefer xpadder its much easier to use and is plenty powerful at giving you alot of options to map all the controls you need for a game. Lost planet and halo 2 support the 360 controller natively. Also for cod games with native 360 controller support check out the Treyarch cod games world at war(with the latest patch you just have to enter a console command and it works) and blackops they have it and I'm pretty sure blackops 2 will have it as well but until it comes out and people confirm don't take that as truth.

Practice using a keyboard and mouse. You'll get owned every time if you use a controller, and that won't be fun. If you want to use a controller for FPS games, get a console.

Yeah I mean come on guy, just buy an Xbox. You apparently have a controller, and you'd be able to play modern Halo games with a way higher community then Halo has on PC, as well as enemies that aren't savants with a keyboard and mouse owning you repeatedly.
