Yea a decent number of people do play, though it can get difficult to team for a number of the missions. Though you can easily counter that by joining a large guild, and there are plenty of large guilds in this game.
yeah, I got the trilogy this morning (I had factions before) and there are loads of players, especially in nightfall. There are also a lot of players in eveything thats pvp related.

Not to be nitpicky, but a lot of people choose Guild Wars for reasons that aren't related to finances. Some avid Guild Wars players are disgruntled ex-grinders from other games that just got sick of the endless leveling. With that said, pay-for-play is one of the reasons I don't play WoW. The amount of time it requires is another. But by no means am I a WoW hater. =] And to answer the OP's question, I still play it. (Casually not Continuously)
I still play it too. Especially for the pvp that is one of the best available. Btw, if you purchase trilogy on the official gw site, you get eyes of the north expansion pack for free, same price as steam.
